I am interested in the University of Michigan… obviously. But I am curious to what hall I would want the most!
First off, I want the option for a single room. So rule out any dorms that don’t have singles.
Second, I obviously want a generally nice dorm with a lot of space! (THIS IS IMPORTANT)
Third, prioritize central campus over others.
I don’t need a social dorm… I am much the opposite of that.
I do want the option of AC.
I was looking through them and I really like the idea of West Quad & Cambridge. It would be neat to be around the athletes even though they party.
You can’t pick which dorm to live in unless you apply directly to one of the living/learning communities. When applying for housing, you pick the category with single room option as your first choice, and then you chose central as your first choice over north. That’s ALL you can do. If everyone could choose which dorm they wanted to live in, the majority of students would choose the ones on Central and the Hill, and, well…that just wouldn’t work, for obvious reasons.
Further, unless you apply to a living/learning community in West Quad (I believe MCSP is the only one), then your chances of getting a room in West Quad are very, very slim. As you mentioned, the athletes live there, and they fill up many of the rooms, making the likelihood of you getting a room there even smaller. Also, Cambridge House is only for upperclassmen AFAIK.
Does it matter if you cannot pick which one anyway? All your criteria will base on luck even for the request of single room which may be easier to fulfill.
it is time to lower your standards/expectations MIGHTILY
This is what will probably happen: you will get a
double dorm
with no air conditioning
a small to moderate amount of space
probably on North Campus but Central is still possible. If you're on Central then you'll probably be in Markley which is unfortunately the opposite of what you're looking for.
West Quad is likely out because of athletes and sophomores, South Quad will probably only be if you do honors, East Quad is if you’re going into the RC, Mojo is for a bunch of communities (such as WISE); Cambridge, North Quad, Stockwell, Couzens all mainly for sophomores and up.
Last year, there were quite a few freshmen got into Loyd. However, they are likely getting the room after UMich traded with 300 returned students with luxury apartments.
