~Freshman Fifteen!~

How/where can I get a water immersion test done?

Do the scales tend estimate that you have more or less body fat than you actually do?

The one I’ve got says I have right over 22% as of about two seconds ago (and yeah, the more water I drink, the less it says…even in the same day)…but I’ve never had either of the other tests done or anything, so I have no clue.

Those scales can err on the high or low side, so it is difficult to tell. As for the water immersion/calipers test I went to a local university and got tested for free because the exercise physiology students were practicing.

Well, I don’t have a lot of jiggle and I’m kinda boney, so I’m just gonna tell myself I have less than what the scale says ;)

Then again, I’m the type of person that could weigh 500 pounds and still have random bones jutting out so who knows.

I really ate like a pig when i was on the meal plan. and u know what being a normal girl eating in the middle of muscled guys. i ate at least 4 full dishes of meat when i found something i liked and i was fine. it’s not that i dont have the fatty genes though. i was always fat and i’m a little bit chubby. and i remember their gaze onto my pile of dishes. i was just like “so what?” ppl had problems finishing their meal plan but i ran out of my meals and they were willing to have me smuggle theirs.

i never gained a single pound because i’m so far away from candy selling spots. and i went to the gym almost every day and spent an hour there. it’s just cool.

most importantly no matter what u gain or lose don’t make ur look too important. it’s all about urself. it’s all about being happy if the doctor don’t tell u that u’r fat enough to increase ur risk of diabetes or heart attack. u better focus on academics. this way i dont get crazy on my body.

Whatever, how you look is important, it reflects how you respect yourself. If some 300 pound girl doesn’t care about herself enough to actually look decent why should she get mad if I call her fat. If you don’t respect yourself enough to be fit, then why should I?

sounds like an excuse to be fat to me

I’m very weird about my weight, though. Seriously…if I think I’m even the least bit chubby, I feel like a total fatass. My friends hate when I make random weight/size comments cause they all think I’m skinny (I’m soo not skinny, though…maybe thin, but not skinny).

I still think I should lose some weight…I wear a 6 now, but wearing a 4 is my dream.

6 sounds about average.

I’m 5’10…

so?

were you hinting that we should call you thin or something?

I haven’t had time to read all the replies but I wanted to add my two cents. My freshmen year I lost 15 pounds. I stopped lifting out of sheer laziness and started to play basketball every day for like 2 hours. Well all the cardio I did started to take effect on my muscle mass and my inconsistent diet made me lose weight. Anyway, your going to find that eating isn’t first priority in college. There are going to be times, especially later in the year, where you do not want to get out of bed 30 minutes earlier and drag your rump to the dining hall. A lot of this is motivation and a lot of us lose it as the year goes on ;). Lunch time is also never a given because a lot of you will find out that naps are more important. You WILL learn to love them and learn to plan your day around them. My best advice would be to eat small meals whenever you get a chance. Really the only part of the day when you are going to be able to eat a huge meal would be at dinner time. Try and buy some protein bars and snack on them during class. Most professors won’t mind. Keep some cereal in your room for the days you don’t feel like going to the dining hall.

You guys may not lose 15 pounds like me but you are not going to gain 15 pounds. I would say between the experimental/social drinking that about 80% of you WILL do and the midnight fast food runs that you WILL engage in assuming you are drunk in the middle of the night, you will probably gain 4-8 pounds.

Nope, just that average for 5’5 may be a 6, but for 5’10 it’s more like an 8. Maybe you missed the part where I said that what other people think has no effect on what I think I should weigh/wear?

Haha so you were right Spanks

Not really. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m not sure why anyone would care what some random person on the internet thinks about someone they’ve never seen or met.

I said, “About average”. A six is a size smaller than eight, and is therefore about average. Average is a range, not a specific number.

So, we agree.

Ok, sorry about that. I tend to be too open and detail oriented at times, so my fault.

ok…if ure 5’9 u DEFINATELY do not need to be 120. freshman 15 would be good for u. im 5’2’’ and 125 and im one of the skinnier girls in school…soooo just a tip.

By the way, are any of y’all new freshman getting nervous yet? I’ve still got another 29 days till I move in and I’m already getting jittery (mostly excited…but a tad bit nervous).

^Nervous? Not quite yet. Excited? Since July.

In June, when I hung out with my friends, it was “I can’t believe we’ve graduated last month!” Since July it’s been “I can’t believe we’re going to college next month!”

I’m ultra excited – all the more because I’m international… 8 days till I board the plane :)
