OK, so here is the situation… I have a 2.64 cumulative GPA… I am only a freshman in high school and I am going to do whatever it takes to make that at least a 3.3 by Junior year. What is the maximum GPA I can get by the end of my Junior year?? Also, what are my chances of going to UMD? I have decent EC’s (Boy Scouts, Cultural Groups, 1 Varsity Sport, and Leadership).
That’s pure algebra. Figure it out. For us to make calculations we would have to make many assumptions.
Get the grades up. Right now you won’t make it.
UMD is not going to be interested in your ECs if your grades and test score don’t make the cut. You say you will do whatever it takes to get your grades up. Here are my suggestions:
- Reduce your EC commitments to the bare minimum to ensure that you have enough time to study.
- Get tutors for any subject that you are not making an A or B in.
- Talk to your teachers any time you do poorly on a test or assignment to find out what you can do better next time.
- If you are taking Honors or AP classes and getting Cs, and outside tutoring isn’t helping, then you need to drop down a level to make sure you are getting the basics down.
- Repeat classes that you fail or get a D in (especially if your school will allow grade replacement but even if they don’t).
- If there are other ‘distractors’ in your life - whatever they may be - figure out how to work around them.
At many schools, a weak freshman year GPA will be given less weight than subsequent years, although I don’t know how UMD views it. Consider the possibility that if your grades don’t go up, you may need to attend community college and, if you do well, transfer from there to UMD.
