How does it look?

Its too early for you to be projecting SAT scores and specific numbers of community service hours. 4 year class planning is a good idea but be open to change. The best thing you can do now is join ECs that interest you, and stick with your favorites for four years, getting more in depth and earning awards and leadership positions as well as leaving a good impression on adults who will be able to write you strong letters of recommendation later. Your college list will probably become shorter as you figure out what you want to do and what’s important to you. Good luck!

Thank you. Good luck to you as well.

Just so you know, the Common Application doesn’t ask about volunteer hours. They ask you to list each of your extracurriculars (up to ten) and an estimate of how much time you spend on each one. Volunteering can be part of that, but it doesn’t have to be. From a Yale admissions officer:

You’ve also listed a lot of prestigious public schools that tend to be unaffordable for out-of-state students. You should talk to your parents about how you will pay for college (i.e. how much they will help and what you’ll be expected to contribute), and then run net price calculators.

Thanks. Since I’m a freshman, I still don’t understand a lot about the Common App. But for the out-of-state schools, I was hoping the university could give me like a college scholarship(ex. STAMPS Scholarship for GA Tech) so the cost of tuition would be reduced. A bit too optimistic?

Yes. Stamps is very competitive.

It’s more difficult to get enough financial aid at top out-of-state public schools than at top private schools. What criteria did you use to make this list?

Top Engineering/Comp Sci Schools

As a freshman, this is all too speculative.
If you want the top, learn what they look for- from them, what they write and show.

thx

As a freshman, I was hoping other freshman would post their profiles. But I think you guys are right. This post was supposed to be half-serious, half-fun, but it is too speculative.

If you’re looking for top engineering/computer science schools, be aware that U of Wa’s comp sci and some of its engineering programs are very competitive and since you apply to the major after you start going to the school, you might not be accepted.

Even with a high sat score, above 1500?

OP, right now, put your effort into learning what these colleges really want and how the competition for some majors works at different schools. In a way, you’re taking a few pieces and trying to project from that. It’s far too soon. Accept your plan to put the energy into rigor and stats, then move on to focus now on learning the rest of what they want, the attributes, the sort of evidence of drives and follow through, then you’ll know better how to make choices over the next 3 years.

Until then, you’re in the dark, dealing with an incomplete picture.

Try it. Get a sense of what really matters, that distinguishes one 4.0/rigor/high test scores from another. It’s not hs clubs or titles. It’s not x hours of service, it’s the sum total of how what you do reflects what you understand. That sort of thinking power, that savvy.

thx

@Mahindra Work hard and find something you’re passionate about (it seems you like community service/debate; maybe focus on those?). Not sure why the poster above feels the need to be so incredibly rude and nasty, but I think if you work hard and find a good EC passion, you will have a chance at at least some of them. I agree with the other posters though- you don’t know what hs will bring and you can’t predict the future. Good luck!
