freshman schedule

What’s a standard freshman schedule like?

Do you mean like a daily schedule?

You take four four-credit classes. And you take a one-credit intro to your major course. Classes are either 65 minutes and meet three times a week or 100 minutes and meet two times a week. If you’re a science/engineering major though, you’ll also have labs and whatnot.

If your class meets three times a week, it is typically Monday, Wednesday, Thursday. And usually 8:00 to 9:05, 9:15 to 10:20, 10:30 to 11:35, 1:35 to 2:40, 4:35 to 5:40.

If your class meets two times a week, it can be Tuesday/Friday, Monday/Wednesday, Monday/Thursday (although other combos are certainly possible). These meeting times are usually 9:50 to 11:30, 11:45 to 1:25, 2:50 to 4:30.

HOWEVER, we currently have “Activities Period” which is a time slot when no classes are scheduled (currently Wednesdays 11:45 to 1:25 and Thursdays 2:50 to 4:30 I believe). As of this fall, this Activities Period is being eliminated from the schedule in order to fit in more classes. So I don’t know what implications this will have on scheduling.

If you want a reference, my freshman schedule was:

Fall
M: 9:15-10:20, 10:30-11:35, 11:45-1:25 [this was my intro to major class and never lasted the full 100 minutes], 2:50-4:30
T: 9:50-11:30
W: 9:15-10:20, 10:30-11:35, 2:50-4:30
R: 9:15-10:20, 10:30-11:35, 4:35-5:30 [this was Enhancing Honors, required for all freshman honors students]
F: 9:50-11:30

Spring
M: 9:15-10:20, 11:45-1:25, 1:35-2:40, 2:50-4:30
T: n/a
W: 9:15-10:20, 10:30-11:35 [this was my Comp Politics recitation-- which is why I didn’t have my Comp Pol 1:35-2:40 course on Thursdays], 1:35-2:40, 2:50-4:30
R: 9:15-10:20, 11:45-1:25
F: n/a

Having Tuesdays and Fridays off is nice, but it really packs your schedule for MWR. But it worked out nicely for me, as I was able to do my service-learning volunteering on Fridays and my other volunteering on Tuesdays spring semester without having to worry about rushing to and from class (but I was still able to easily fit this volunteering in fall semester). Lots of free time in college and lots of different options for how to fill it!

Sorry if this isn’t what you were looking for haha

This is so helpful! Thank you so much!

Also, what are the four classes the freshman take? For ex. a writing course, a math course, a history course, and an intro to major course?

Completely depends on major. Have you declared?

My roommate is an engineer, so she took 3 engineering courses (like physics 1, chem 1, and calc 2 I believe first semester) and then 1 elective (linguistics).

I was undeclared but knew that I’d be declaring International Affairs. For undeclared students, I believe they recommend taking 2 core courses and then 1 course each in two majors you’re interested in. I took Globalization (the intro IAF course… different than the intro to your major course), Macro (an IAF requirement), Global Climate Change (science level 1 requirement), and Advanced Spanish 1 (for my Spanish minor) as well as Connections and Decisions (intro to major course for undeclared students) and Enhancing Honors.

Yeah, so it’s not quite as straightforward as a writing course, math course, history course, etc. And the intro to major course is just 1 credit, so it is in addition to the four 4 credit courses you’d be taking.

Yes, I declared international affairs.

So I would be taking globalization, macro, intro to major, and another course required for IAF?

Thank you so much for your help!

Also, how is the foreign language department at NEU?

Yes, how is the language department?? : )
And if you were accepted into the Journalism program, for instance, does that mean you’ve declared your major already, or do you have to do it officially, once you arrive?
Thanks!!

Yay, International Affairs! You’ll definitely take Globalization & International Affairs (and it should be with Prof. Horn in the fall-- making it the single most inspiring course you’ll take at NU :)). If you don’t have AP credit or anything, you’ll probably also take College Writing. I only took Macro fall semester because there was an honors section of it (I believe most IAF freshmen take it spring semester). And then you’ll probably have an elective and another IAF req (I think my IAF friends did regional things like Intro to Latin American History). And the 1-credit intro to IAF.

Sorry I can’t speak to the strength of the foreign language department. I got a 5 on the AP Spanish Language test in high school but still took Advanced Spanish 1 & 2 here. So I knew all the material, but they were good refresher courses. I liked that I was required to do service-learning for them, which gave me real world Spanish experience. I met some freshmen this year who seemed to be learning a lot in their Japanese course. But yeah, sorry I really don’t know.

If you applied to Journalism, then you’re already declared.

Just to point out, the “Introduction to College” course that everyone has to take isn’t part of the four courses.

I’m really looking forward to Fall!

For College Writing, do you know if NE accepts IB credit for the English exam? Otherwise, I took the AP Writing and Composition exam last year and scored a 4, will this suffice?

Yup, NU accepts AP and IB credit. My roommate says that for IB, it must be an HL course with a score of 5 or higher. And you get 8 units for the IB English? But yeah, the AP credit suffices. http://www.northeastern.edu/admissions/pdfs/credit/APCredit22510.pdf

Ah, I see. Thanks for posting the link!

And thank you so so much for the insightful replies. You’ve been extremely helpful.

Be careful with IB scores. They definitely accept them, but sometimes the scores don’t get sent or registered, etc. Mine never appeared, but since I only would have gotten IB credit for things I already got AP credit for, I never brought it up. But if you don’t see them, email your advisors pronto because after a short while, you can’t change them.

No problem! Please let me know if you have any other questions, especially anything IAF-related!

I will! Thank you again!
