Hi. I haven’t been on this site for a while and I came back to seek some of the prior posts on IU Business classes. My son is a first year direct admit. He passed A100, X100, calculus, X104 last semester. He just got an F on the first econ test of this semester. What should he do? Take the second test, drop it, drop and community college, if drop then add second 8 week course, if so then which one? Thank so much for your advice, Steve

He would have to improve dramatically if he stays in the class, as he needs a “C” or better for all I-Core prerequisites. Depending how low the F is (a 50 would be much worse than a 69, if that is the scale they use), it could be very difficult to get all the way up to a C, and could cause a lot of anxiety. So, I might take it at a CC in the summer. He won’t be taking econ with 250 other students at the CC, so it will probably be easier there, and of course, he only needs a C in the class at the CC for it to transfer to IU and it won’t count on his IU gpa.

Is you son also in Hutton Honors College? If not, it will be really difficult for him to get a distribution option course for the second eight weeks, as all of the freshman level ones are full already except for COLL S103, which is an honors class on Renaissance literature and politics that counts as an A&H class and you have to be in honors college to take it.

He might wind up having to take a phys ed class or something if he needs to get back to 12 hours and still be full-time.

Also, the best option might be to take BUS X220 Career Perspectives, which is a two hour class that is needed to get into I-Core. There are only three or four seats left in the lab sessions; if you can sign up for one of the labs, you will get into the lecture, even if the lecture is full now. Use the e-drop/add and the drop add for both classes will be approved at the same time. But he will have to act really fast to get in.

Here is the list of second eight week classes.

What does his advisor say? What does he want to do? Does he know what went wrong? My D was in that spot last semester (but different school, different class). Advisor said “drop it… maybe your not the science type”. That’s all she needed to hear. Stayed in the class and finished with a B-.

Adding x220 appears to be the best option. He can add it now increasing to 17 hours, take the Econ midterm and drop it if he doesn’t ace it. Does that strategy make sense?

That’s a good plan. He won’t get charged the credit hour rate for the added class as long as he does not go over 17 hours. And he will still be satisfying at least one I-Core prerequisite between microeconomics and X220.

Well, I agree with bthomp1 and do suggest that you son drop now (when a “W” can still be taken–this applies until March 11th) per the following academic calendar:

[Official Calendar - Spring 2009: Office of the Registrar: Indiana University Bloomington](http://registrar.indiana.edu/time_sensitive/offcalen4092.shtml)

if the grade is below a 55 or lower

–but if he does decide to stay in the course because he has something like a 65 and thinks he can get a C or better, you should also be aware of the special “extended-X” policy Indiana University has.

[Course Retake Policy: Office of the Registrar: Indiana University Bloomington](http://registrar.indiana.edu/extendedx.shtml)

If he should go on, and then get a grade such as a C- or D or F, he can retake the course again at IU-B (as long as he hasn’t yet completed 45 units) and have the second grade only count towards his GPA. (Both grades will go on the transcript, but only the second one will count for the GPA.)

My son never used this option–but it’s one that I wish we knew about–and that could be used at least once during the college experience regardless of how many units were completed. (which as I already stated, you can only do during the first 45 units).

P.S. Good luck to your son.

I second the Extended X policy for any student who is ALREADY a direct admit.

Even though openings seemed to be present for Bus-x220 on the eadd, the requests were rejected. The next test in econ is right around 3-11. He was aware of the extended drop but doen’t want to have a low grade on his transcript. The current plan is to take the second test and, depending on outcome, drop with a W or retain it. There is a 2-unit distribution class that has 20 openings that will be the filler if he drops.

Thanks for the great advice.

brimil88, not trying to be difficult, but I did not think any two credit hour classes could qualify for distribution option. I went through the list of the ones that are offered this semester, and none of the two hour ones was listed in the COAS list of distribution option courses. Also, you need six hours at least in all of the areas, so doing a two unit class now would necessitate finding a four unit class later to make the six-- and that would really be tough unless it was, say a four unit science class with a lab session included.

I know it doesn’t sound very appetizing, but that COLL S103 class in hutton honors college still has seven openings, and I’m pretty sure that it is the last A&H distribution class with any openings (maybe the last of any of the distribution options classes that is open). It has seven openings left. My son dropped a class and signed up for this class two weeks ago, and there were only two people in the class then, so it is filling up fast with Hutton Honors students (many of which are also Kelley direct admits) anxious to get a distribution option class out of the way, and who probably don’t care much for the subject matter.

If you son is trying to get into Mitte, a low grade in econ would hurt a lot, so that is why I though he might drop it, not because I did not think he could raise it to at least a C, which Kelley requires.
