Freshman year grades

I was wondering how colleges, specifically FSU, would look at hs freshman year grades. I think I messed around too much and didn’t really understand the importance that every year of hs held. I also had some problems including both grandparents dying within a few months and a divorce so I didn’t really care much about school. I had around an 85 avg in 9th, 93/94 or so in 10th, and 96 in the 1st two marking periods of 11th. Would they look at that increase as being a good thing?

Yankees, ill be glad to help u out but to get even more help in ur case, i suggest u go to FSU thread. I just applied this year to colleges. In Florda I applied to USF and Miami. I didnt apply to FSU but i know a fare share about it. Yes they will look at freshman grades and yes they will use it to re calculate ur gpa. However the good news is this: with the grades ur making, you should probably have like a 3.4-3.5. that is fine for FSU. I know a ton of kids that applied with 3.0 and good SAT scores that got in. FSU is not overly selective. FSU from what several relatives have told me is not that great. To prove it with facts its not even in the top 50 public school’s list. I would pick UF over FSU and yes u have a chance if u keep up your grades.

Sorry about that. I am looking at FSU and MSU and also posted this message in the FSU thread. I forgot to edit my message. Thanks for your help. Do you know about MSU with regards to my question?

Also, if you don’t mind me asking…Were you accepted to the schools you mentioned, and what was your GPA/SAT scores?

I was just looking at this…

Seems like UF is pretty hard to get into.

LetsGoYankees, MSU looks at trends and understands the maturation of HS students. If your progression is steady, as yours looks to be, and you’ve stayed in the 90s range ever since, chances are MSU wouldn’t even look at the 9th grade and the need to explain your very difficult family situation is practically nil. Besides, 85 isn’t an end-of-the world mark to begin with. The question now is how are your board scores?

I agree with Quincy. I got accepted at both OSU and MSU. I had a 3.0 and 1680 SAT scores. However my school was pretty hard and they knew it so that game me some consideration. Bottom line Yankees is that MSU has stats that scare many away. i think they state their range is 3.4-3.8 gpa well if thats the case i wasnt even in the range. however My SAT scores were well within the range. I reccommend sending Essays and at least 3 letters of Rec, cause from what I hear it is getting really selective. This year apps increased. I applied from an American School in El Salvador and about 40 applications went in from El Salvador, extremely unusual. I sent my app materials in Dec and it took them almost a month to clear them to get them ont he system. so definately dont slack off for MSU. Gooood LUCK. Im waiting on Miami by the way and if i get in i will probably attend there.

Quincy…I havent taken the SAT or ACT yet. I will be taking the SAT on March 10 and ACT in April.

Acarta…I am interested in the same schools you seem to be. FSU, OSU, and MSU are my top three choices. Out of those three, which do you think is the easiest for admission?
