Freshman year was horrible

So my freshman year I had a lot going on. I had a brother who passed away in the beginning of the year, a close friend was diagnosed with cancer, and I was diagnosed with severe epilepsy. Because of this, I missed a lot of school and it was a horrible year. I finished the year with a 2.4 GPA at private school. Now, my grades are much better, with a 3.6 GPA. I was wondering if my horrible first year will affect my chances of getting into certain schools, or if they’ll understand my situation. Please let me know your thoughts.

I think if you keep showing an upward trend and explain the terrible challenges you faced freshman year, you will land a great school. I’m very sorry for the loss of your brother.

Your guidance counselor can explain the situation in his/her college recommendation letter.

There are many schools that do not count freshman year at all. They tell you.
