Friend needs housing in NYC this week - medical need

The sister of a friend of mine needs to spend time at Sloan Kettering for cancer treatment. She’s been battling a very aggressive cancer (Triple Negative Breast Cancer ) for about a year and a half and so far the cancer is winning. Her doctors would like to go to to Sloan Kettering for a clinical trial.

So, she needs a place to stay in NYC. Cost is a factor since even with ‘good’ health insurance, she’s still in debt over this.
Ideally, she would like to stay overnight in the city on Thursday, 8/22 and again on Wednesday, 8/28 and Thursday, 8/29.
A long commute is not an option due to the side effects of this treatment. Memorial Sloan Kettering is at 160 West 53rd Street at Third Avenue.

She’s been told that the free and low cost accommodations (Miracle House and Hope Lodge) for people undergoing medical treatment in NYC currently have no space available.

Any thoughts fellow CCers?
Thanks in advance!!

Has she asked the social workers at the hospital if they have any suggestions?

bookreader, it’s East 53rd not West, in case that affects someone’s advice here.

I agree that she should be in touch with the social workers at Sloan Kettering for advice on accommodation.

I check some rates. The lowest that I could find that was a decent location was:
The NewYork-Presbyterian Guest Facility
Address
1320 York Avenue
(Between 70th and 71st Streets)
New York, NY 10021

Reservations
800-HM-TOWER or 800-468-6937
Website

This facility is just two short blocks north of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. All apartments include kitchenettes, cable TV, and daily housekeeping service. The Sovereign Suites, located on the 12th floor, have been newly renovated and include new kitchens and bathrooms, as well as amenities such as flat-screen TVs, high-definition cable, and high-speed Internet access. This is a nonprofit facility that serves patients and families of all area hospitals.

The rate for 8/22 and 8/28(for 2 nights) Is $250 per night. (Rate for Sloan patients)

The Courtyard Marriott with the Sloan rate is $252 per night. I’ll keep looking.

Pod 51…very close on 51st St. Tiny rooms, low price.

[The POD 51 Hotel - Midtown East - New York, NY](http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-pod-51-hotel-new-york-3)

Thanks so much everyone! After I posted here, I told my friend about this post. She just created an account on CC and is now awaiting an email from them. She’ll hop on and answer the questions. She is so appreciative that you all took time to answer.

You guys are the best!

I can vouch for The NewYork-Presbyterian Guest Facility. I lived there for several months more than 20 years ago, when it was called The Hemlsley Medical Tower. The upper floors were housing for NY-Cornell nurses (and may be today still) and I just moved in with someone who was a nurse. Probably couldn’t get away with that today. A friend stayed on the hotel floors recently when her husband underwent treatment at MSK.

Realizing that is too expensive, I looked at Travel Zoo for NYC. Times Square is not exactly convenient (and not quiet) but these rates are good. [Last-Minute Travel Deals: $139-$159 – NYC: Times Square Hotel through August, 45% Off | Travelzoo](http://www.travelzoo.com/last-minute/new-york/-139-159-NYC-Times-Square-Hotel-through-August-45-Off-1532064/?conf=1&cm=signedin&source=_tzlock&placement=Overlay-TravelDeal-DealPage-SignUpFP5&isFacebook=false&isgplus=undefined)

Good luck. Hope social workers can offer better suggestions.

Thanks to a tremendous group effort, my sister and I have found a place to stay and are looking forward to a successful experience at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Thank you!
