From co-worker to supervisor Help!

I have been a nurse for 30 years, 26 on the same unit. My youngest is off to college and I decided to apply for our unit supervisor. I was offered the position but now am nervous about the transition from peer to supervisor.
Anyone have experience with this?
Any helpful suggestions?

When I first began to hire people, and to this day, and my H has this same philosophy in his capacity as a CFO, I saw it as my job to “support” the people who worked “for” me. I saw it as my job to work for them. I have great employees.

The best school principle I ever saw had this same philosophy and it was so apparent in the way he was always in the hallways and in the classrooms and assisting the teachers with whatever they needed. YMMV Good luck!

I agree with poetgrl - your role is to support the workers in your group. You need to do what you can to enable them to do their jobs as efficiently as possible and also keep them as happy and satisfied in their jobs as is reasonable. If your workers do a good job and are happy then it’ll reflect well on the entire group and you. You also need to represent your group well to higher management and make them understand the value of your group.

The job can be a little tougher when issues arise including what to do when you have a worker who’s doing a poor job. Hint - like an illness it needs to get taken care of right away, hopefully with an improvement in the person but if not, with a replacement.

To make it easy and intuitive just consider what you as a worker look for in your supervisor and try to deliver that when you’re in the position - fairness, honesty, integrity, openness, understanding the group’s mission, knowing the people and their strengths and weaknesses, willingness to consult with the people and guide them as needed.

Congrats on the new position. They likely wouldn’t have offered it to you if they didn’t think you’d do well at it.
