From NY - Dorming

I am from NY and I have to take a plane to UCLA. As for dorming, how is everyone going to do it? Some of the things can obviously go in a luggage/ are not that important, but have no idea how to bring stuff like a printer, microwave, garbage, video games, etc.
I know I can buy things there instead of bring them from New York if they’re small

And a question about when school is over in the summer, how do I bring everything back?

Would it just be best to hope that my roommates are instate students and ask to borrow their stuff?

My previous roommate from NorCal took 1 backpack, 1 suitcase, and 1 large cardboard box on his flight.

You do not need to bring garbage cans. There will be like three in your room (trash trash, bathroom trash, and recycling trash). Of course, you can use them however you want.

I consider printers optionally, and not so recommended because the dorms will provide you with $5.00 credit for printing for the year (500 black and white pages; or 20 colored pages). You can purchase more printing credit if you need it. Printers are also available at libraries and around campus. Only bring a printer if you really cherish the convenience to print at your desk whenever you want; otherwise, you can go to a library, making sure that it’s not closed.

My NorCal roomie brought a printer anyways; he rarely used it.

Try coordinating with your roommates who might bring a microwave or refrigerator so that you don’t have to.

When the school year is over, you bring everything back the same way you brought them; for example, in a big cardboard box. There’s probably some third-party service available for you to rent storage, but that’s probably expensive and not desirable.

And yeah, you can try to make friends who have homes nearby and ask them to keep stuff for you.

Thanks a lot for the response!

They’re building a Target in Westwood so they should have everything covered. The UCLA store is also pretty good, so you can also buy a lot of “dorm room stuff” there.

If you’re taking a plane, I’d probably just bring a laptop and then a couple of suitcases worth of clothes and shoes. Maybe a couple of sweaters and maybe a windbreaker, but it isn’t cold here in the fall so you don’t need any cold-weather stuff.

If there’s stuff that you aren’t sure if you want to bring, then you can just leave it in NY and then if you go home for Thanksgiving (or the Winter Break), then bring it back to CA with you if you decide you can’t live without it.
