Per the link in the OP:

“Based on advice of counsel,” Fitzsimmons said, “admission officers will not have access to data on race or ethnicity until the admissions process is entirely over.”

ETA: Our friends’ kid is one of the “lucky” accepted students. We are thrilled for him.

The race question is still on the common app because schools have to be able to track race and report it to the DOE each year. Schools suppress that question when they are reading apps.

It’s perfectly legal, and definitely worth their while to ask. The Supreme Court decision banned them from using it for admissions, not from collecting the data.
