FSU to start Alternative Energy Research Center

Still not quite a done deal…but getting much closer.

Under terms of the agreement, FSU would sublease a 21.2-acre site to the biomass plant, start an International Center for Alternative Energy Research linked to the plant and pursue energy conservation measures. In return, the city would pay FSU a yearly incentive based on energy savings over 10 years.

The agreement fell apart at the last commission meeting when commissioners tried to hold FSU to specific energy savings. The contract adopted Wednesday eliminates that stipulation.

The vote Wednesday was 4-1, with Commissioner Debbie Lightsey opposed.

"I feel more comfortable (now) that the deal is a positive one for the city," Commissioner Mark Mustian said.
