Thank you very much for this information. I read somewhere that you have a daughter at FSU majoring in chemistry. I also intend to major in that field, so can you tell me if she likes the program and some of the activities that she has been involved with?

Also, My parents recently decided to move to texas. So, i may be joining them after a year or so at FSU. Should I be able to tranfer into UT- austin or another school there with a high GPA , such as 3.9?

One more thing, I may consider changing my major to law once I start at FSU, so can anyone describe how that would work if I did my first year of undergrad as if I was going to major in biochemistry?

Thank you very much. Input from anyone is appreciated…

She’s a biochemistry major, so there are some minor differences.

She’s in the FSU Honors program, so all she’s had in her major and related subjects have been full professors. The science classes start out larger until around mid-semester Organic I or Calculus II, then they tend to pare down pretty fast as kids decide maybe Accounting or English is not such a bad major after all.

You will work very hard if this major is your goal. Whoever the party animals are at FSU, I can assure you they are not science majors. I think I wrote that in these areas sleeping and eating can seem like optional things to do at certain times and this is not too far from the truth. However, once such a degree is completed your chances of a nice position are quite high; as are graduate programs or professional schools (medical, dental, etc).

She’s been able to perform research in some chemistry professors’ labs, which has been very meaningful. Do that if you can. It can lead to you publishing research in the serious academic journals and this can help your career.

The dorms at FSU have been fine. Try for the renovated east side dorms.

I would think a transfer to UTexas is workable if you’re in this major. But I would suggest giving such a move a lot of thought since the chemistry and physics programs at FSU are very good.

Changing majors depends a lot on the major. Some are quite regimented and may make you wait some time before allowing entry. Some are much easier. Follow your passion as this will enable your best efforts.

Thank you for the help.

Too good a list to let slip off…

For the fans of ratings…

Folks, this data may be from as far back as 1998. It can be quite old…and thus not up to current ratings.

For example, Meteorology and Creative Writing are probably waaay off from current ratings.

Creative writing is supposed to be #1 in the US in this year or next, for example.
