Am I reading this wrong, or is he saying Pell Grant students will not need to pay tuition and fees because non-Pell Grant students will already be paying enough that the University does not need their money?

The differential was intended to help with improving financial aid from its infancy. So it seems Pres Barron is going on record and insuring that Pell eligible students will get financial aid that does not include loans for all tuition/fees (not room/board/books).

I don’t know if President Barron’s statement really serves any good purpose other than confusing people. The verbal gymnastics he uses in his statement could easily be misunderstood or misleading to the general public. When the general population throughout the state of Florida sees in their local newspaper that FSU guarantees that all tuition and fees will be paid for for needy students, the general population is going to think every student that rolls in off the street to FSU is going to get ALL of their college expenses paid for 100%. Of course tuition and fees does not include room rent, meals, books, required health insurance, etc.

Too, when tuition and fees are raised–Pell, Bright Futures, scholarships may cover that but students have less for the other expenses–so needy students are affected adversely financially having less money to pay for the other expenses like books, and room & board. Also the way President Barron paints things in his statement it will be easier for trustees and Board of Governors to justify raising tuition even higher.

^^
Either that or you need to focus hard in ENC1101… :|

^^Or maybe some people need a course in basic math and accounting if they don’t recognize the smoke and mirrors shell game Dr. Barron presented. Universities don’t increase tuition and other fees to put money in students’ pockets, universities increase tuition and fees to put more money in their pockets! FSU estimates the cost of attendance at over $18,000/yr for Florida resident undergraduate students–tuition and related fees are only one part of expenses. If a student has $5000 in scholarships and grants, sure 100% of tuition is covered if tuition is $4500/yr with $500 left over for other expenses. If a student has $5000 in scholarships and grants, and tuition charge is raised to $5000 from $4500 sure 100% of tuition is covered with $0 left over for other expenses. When tuition and related fees increase all students, both needy and non-needy, are impacted financially.

Everyone knows FSU is scraping for money with the tight economy. It’s going to be worse this year with the state budget and also no federal stimulus money. FSU is looking for additional revenue, and tuition increases can be expected in the near future. I just think Dr. Barron’s tuition guarantee was a little bit of a stretch in the intellectually honest dept.
