They are now reporting that the gunman flew in from Canada and the gun that was used was a legally checked gun. He just picked the case up from baggage claim, went to the bathroom to load and came out firing.
whenever I read and hear these things I can’t stop imagining that I was there and what if those were my children that got shot in such an ordinary setting. Why, why, WHY can’t we have gun control?
@intparent I’ve looked seriously into how to get citizenship in Canada (Windsor is literally a 20 minute drive from here), England (family there), and Spain (my mom is a dual-citizen there) over the last month or so. I’m kind of tethered here because of my PhD funding but my health trumps all. We’ll have to see.
I didn’t know before today that you could fly with live ammunition. That is terrifying to me.
^Because freedom.
News is reporting the shooter as Esteban Santiago, a US citizen from NJ. They say he joined the National Guard last August, and was living in Alaska. They say he flew into Ft.Lauderdale airport and had the gun in his checked luggage!!!
@romanigypsyeyes As far as moving as it relates to health concerns/insurance, there are states that you can move to that provide guaranteed healthcare.
I just watched Michelle Obama’s speech from this morning before reading this thread. HOPE. You’ve got to always have it!
I totally understand the frustration and hey, I have a cottage in Canada that some days looks enticing to be at full time on that side of the border.
If we don’t have hope, then I feel like we give these deranged people permission to take more down. We give up. We become defeated and we all continue to be victims.
The thing is - where do we find the hope? How do we make hope happen? I HOPED for better, stricter gun reform. Now? I just don’t see it happening. I don’t have that glimmer of hope. How can we find it?
Many prayers for the victims and their families. For the city. For the police we see on the tv screen trying to scale down each inch of the airport. It’s so disturbing. But we have to hope. Somehow.
I feel great sorrow for the victims (dead and injured) and their family members and friends. I also feel great anger against those leaders of and members of our society who elevate the rights of gun and ammunition manufacturers over the rights of human beings.
@doschicos Unfortunately, it’s not just that. I don’t think I want to raise my future, hypothetical children here. Too much violence, too much suffering.
This is so awful. My son is going to be flying into that same airport on Monday to spend a few days in South Florida, and then will be going there again to fly to Havana. I know that the chances of anything happening there again so soon aren’t great, but I’m still kind of having a panic attack.
As has been frequently pointed out, the response to the would-be shoe bomber was that we now have to remove our shoes in airports.
Do you think the response to this will be that guns are no longer allowed in checked baggage?
Yeah, right.
No. Because he could have driven to the airport, parked, walked to baggage claim and done the same thing.
Why fly from Alaska to Florida to do this? Most likely this is another deranged person, maybe on drugs.
This is horrible news to read when my own daughter is currently in the process of flying from Asia back to the northeast US. So tragic.
She landed safely in LA though.
The big issue is not just in the USA but worldwide. The challenge is the “soft target” of shopping markets, baggage claim/airport pickup, etc.
We know people who left USA when Bush was elected. Wouldn’t be surprised to see some/mass exodus now.
“Why fly from Alaska to Florida to do this? Most likely this is another deranged person, maybe on drugs.”
-
Bigger market/media coverage. Shooting in Alaska probably wouidnt make national news.
-
More people to shoot in Ft. Lauderdale airport.
-
Because yard time in prison will be much more pleasant in Florida than yard time in Alaska.
With a Spanish mother, wouldn’t you be a Spanish citizen?

" Shooting in Alaska probably wouidnt make national news."
Of course it would.
“Because yard time in prison will be much more pleasant in Florida than yard time in Alaska.”
Likely to be charged by feds not the state.
Airports are just targets worldwide. LAX has been the scene of at least two shootings. Brussels, Istanbul, Rome, and others I’m likely forgetting. This, despite the fact that airports have better security, police present, than other softer targets.
@ucbalumnus By Spanish law, yes. Never looked into it because before this year, I never had a reason to.
I don’t know how it works and, again, before recently, never cared. As far as I know, I have only US citizenship.
Do you really need to google every minor thing that people say in threads? This thread wasn’t about citizenship which is why I didn’t elaborate.
@doschicos, spoilsport!
How’s this for a real answer - because he could, so he did.
The fact is now there is no place where anyone is safe from a mass shooting, because any Tom, Dick or Harry can buy as many guns and as much ammo as their heart desires.
We are awash with guns.
We are a very, very sick nation.
