Ft. Lauderdale shooting

Now, that’s more accurate! :-B

@aMacMom, the number of people killed
around the world by terrorists every year is dwarfed by the number of gun violence deaths in America. We are dumber than rocks as a nation on this when you look at gun death statistics from the rest of the world.

Many of the countries in the world with the highest homicide rates (Mexico, Jamaica, the Bahamas, other Caribbean islands ) are places where people go to vacation and ‘relax’.

This being CC and me being me, I must report that the head college counselor at my DS’s school was in the line of fire at the Ft. Lauderdale airport and his life was saved by the school-issued laptop, which took the shooter’s bullet. I’m sure the shock for him is only just beginning. Terrifying.

To make matters worse, now he’ll have to deal with the professional “geniuses” at the school’s Knowledge Bar … know that getting a loaner will be unpleasant.

Oh my, @GnocchiB that’s really scary!! Someone from here was hit in the hand by some sort of shrapnel. That’s all that’s been shared so far.

If that was me, after I got over the shock, I would want the exact same model of laptop.

Very sad for those families
My son and his college swim team flew out of that airport yesterday to go back home from their training trip.
So scary

@GnocchiB That is so scary. Thank goodness for the laptop being in the right place at the right time. No doubt the school will bend over backwards not to add to the counselor’s troubles.

Emilybee- 5 people are dead and your main concern is that you might have some delays at security? Self absorbed much?

@MomofWildChild,

Since my country does nothing about these massacres beyond merely thoughts and prayers for the victims and their families, I am now beyond caring about the victims or their families.

We’ve collectively decided that guns are more important than people lives.

Some laptop maker now has a new selling feature…

That’s disgraceful.

The news here is saying something about his possibly having been on some Canadian flight, but that’s unclear. Also see that his brother reported that he had some mental health care in Alaska, and there is a report that he went into an FBI office and said something about being compelled to act for ISIS (or words to that effect). This is all unconfirmed.

I didn’t realize that one could check a weapon in a suitcase. The report I read said he had “declared” it when he checked it through.

From ABC News:

His supervisors at Signal 88 were apparently concerned about things he had expressed - so concerned that they brought him to the attention of the FBI office in Anchorage. It is unclear what assessment was made by the FBI, a second source confirms he did have contact with the FBI before the shooting.

Sources tell ABC News the alleged suspect received mental health treatment after the encounter with the FBI.

“Concerned about things he had expressed” Hmmm.

Another shooter like in the Orlando shooting already on the FBI radar.

So you have no sympathy for the victims/families? How do you get there? Never mind. I’ve heard enough from you on this. Good luck with your TSA precheck line!

Yes, firearms may be put in checked baggage, subject to TSA and airline rules. TSA rules include the requirement that they be unloaded and in locked containers, and declared to the airline:

this thread should be a case study for the previous ucbalumnus thread on why people think crime is going up.

What does sympathy accomplish? Really, what does it do for anyone in a circumstance like this?

I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that it’s going to come out that this guy was an ISIS sympathizer. They seem to like attacking airports and nightclubs.
