Fulfilling pre-med requirements...

Question for current Princeton students or just anyone who knows…

I’m considering going into a career in dentistry… Dental school has similar requirements as medical school (2 semesters bio, 2 organic chem, 2 general chem, 2 physics, and 2 english) but I want to major in history and study abroad my junior year, so I’m kind of worried that it won’t all fit. My question is: when do pre-med/dental students take which courses during their time at Princeton? this will give me a better picture of what my situation looks like…

depending on advanced placement of course, the typical schedule for the science classes for princeton premeds would be

Frosh fall:
Gen chem, Calc 1, EEB211, one other class (writing sem?)

Frosh spring
Gen chem, Calc 2, MOL 215, one or two other classes

Sophomore fall
Orgo, maybe physics, 2 or 3 other classes

Sophomore spring
Orgo, maybe physics, 2 or 3 other classes

thus, the premed requirements would be done by sophomore year. Biochem, which is recommended if you are going to med school, can be the second semester of bio if you have AP credit, and is usually taken sophomore or junior year. The writing seminar (required of freshmen) counts as one of the required english classes.

there arent many requirements to be a history major, I actually know a bunch of them who are pre-med as well. The only thing to think about is that Princeton requires Junior independant work, which is harder to do off campus. It would be hard to go abroad your entire junior year, as you need an advisor to help you with your independant work. However, some foreign universities have programs set up especially for princeton students (ie oxford has a program for woody woo majors), and with e-mail its easier to communicate. It still might be easier to go abroad sophomore year before you need independant work, and just push the premed requirements back to junior year.

hope that helps

I’m sure AP credit in bio, physics, chem or calculus would be helpful as well. That would allow you to fulfill the premed requirements and still major in history and study abroad.

Cool thanks guys!

Okay, another question… say I get AP credit in Bio and Calc AB… would that mean my schedule would be like this…

Frosh fall:
Gen chem, Calc 2, EEB211, one other class (writing sem)

Frosh spring
Gen chem, Orgo, maybe physics, one or two other classes

Sophomore fall
Orgo, maybe physics, 2 or 3 other classes

Sophomore spring
Whatever else I want/need to take?

I don’t really know very much about this type of thing, so please tell me what I’m mistaken about. I really want to go to Spain for at least part of junior year, but I know that I’d need a little bit of extra preparation in Spanish beyond my current level. So obviously, it would be really difficult fulfilling pre-dental requirements, prerequisites for a history major, Spanish courses, and all of the distribution requirements.

Also, in what year would I take the DATs (dental equivalent of MCATs) at Princeton?

Thanks
