hi! i was just wondering how much ability to pay would help in terms of small liberal arts schools. in particular- colgate. im applying early decision to colgate with decent but not stellar grades (3.79 weighted at a top high school), decent extra-curriculars (editor of the newspaper, national honor society, crew, etc.), okay test scores but not great (2090 SAT/30 ACT), etc. i know that i would never get in if i applied regular decision. if i am full pay, and i am applying early, how much do you think that would affect the decision?

as a full pay you have an very good chance at 'Gate RD, but ED will likely seal the deal.

Go for it.

I’m not sure how Colgate will emphasize full pays this year. BUT, Colgate only has a 25% acceptance rate, though the ED acceptance rate is closer to 50%, but you don’t know how many of those ED students are hooked. The most highly rated acceptance criteria are Rigor, Class Rank and GPA. 3.79 weighted would be somewhere around 3.5 UW and would be around the 50% level for acceptance. It looks like you have a pretty good shot but I wouldn’t put it higher than that.

If you are planning to go to med school, Colgate has a program affiliated with Upstate Medical University where you can pay SUNY Tuition while attending Colgate. Here’s a link.
The deadline for the program is October 15.

thanks everyone! anyone else have anything to add?

I agree 10000000%. Think about it.

ED is for people who would absolutely attend a school if admitted. Looking at your OP, that situation applies in your case, right?

So why wouldn’t you apply ED? Well, if money is an issue, then you wouldn’t be able to compare FA decisions from different schools.

But money isn’t an issue, since you said “I am full pay”.

This is a **textbook case **of “Yes, you should apply ED”.

Go for it. And good luck to you! :)

Colgate is in need of rowers. Contact the coach and get his advice.

I was thinking of doing that… but I really don’t want to row in college because it’s really time-consuming so I don’t know…
