Gotta start as a sophomore and be a caddy. Am I the only one who thought of Caddyshack when I read this?
Wow. Not bad. Evans has always been a big deal around here, and I can see why. Too bad we have no golfers in our family. Takes sooo much time away from other things. This is one reason I would find that worth it!
I guess you don’t have to be a golfer, just a caddy
I tried to convince my girls to do this but they’d have none of it. The Evans Scholar house at our university is right across the street from the student union (prime location) and we treated them like a fraternity for purposes of social get togethers. It’s better than most scholarships because you don’t have to do much once you are awarded the scholarship. Unlike an athletic scholarship, you don’t have to play or caddie during terms.
I know a guy (my age) who got through college at Indiana on Evans scholarships.
As I look at the numbers again, it’s 1 out of 3 that get it, really. I wonder what the stats of the candidates/winners are like?
When I was looking at it (so maybe 6 years ago) the requirement was that the student had to be in the top 25% of his class, have a financial need (although that isn’t hard to meet - who doesn’t need money for college?), so the stats of the students varied by the strength of the high school. A lot of the application has to do with recommendations, other ECs. Of course the student has to be admitted to the school (usually go to the one in your state; can go to a different school if a particular major is not offered)
There was a parent on CC last year and her son was selected.
I don’t think of Caddyshsck because it’s not new news to me. Evans Scholars has been around forever. I’m guessing they’ve probably been on Northwestern’s campus for 70 years. They have their own house, which is located in the sorority quad, which is a win win for them :-). They have similar chapters at other schools, mostly big state schools in the Midwest.
A friend of mine’s father was an Evans Scholar at NU graduating around 1960 or so, and her husband is a golf pro, so they actively support the organization. It’s a great organization from what I understand.
Yes, I read that the first student used the scholarship at NW so I’m not surprised alumna/neighbor @pizzagirl is aware of it.
I, however, was not. Not many opportunities to caddy where i grew up - in Harlem. I’m guessing I’m not the only one who wasn’t aware of it.
Oh, I agree. I certainly never heard of it before I went there - we were not golf course types!
My uncle had a caddie scholarship back in the 50’s. Not a full one like the Evans scholars program (he went to Williams, and the Evans scholars were in western states), but nice to have. Evans scholars started in Chicago, and is still biggest in the midwest.
I will say that playing golf with my uncle is a different experience. He can find any ball, anywhere. Caddie training.
My nephew has been a caddie since his freshman summer and it has been the greatest job for him. Basically makes his own hours and a lot of money relative to other kids his age. I’m going to tell my sister to look into caddying scholarships - who knew? It will be something if caddying ends up being the source of significant money for college!
They’re rehabbing the Evans Scholar house here. It is in a fabulous location, and is one of the best deals going.
My old boss was on the Evans selection committee. It’s such a great deal. No, you don’t have to golf - just have to have caddied.
