I have well-off parents ($200,000+ a year) who refuse to pay for my higher education. I’ve scored a 2010 composite on my SAT and a 33 on my ACT. Are there ANY 4 year schools with computer science/engineering programs outside of Texas I can get large scholarships to?

University of Alabama. Apply now (application is online).
Check out Ole Miss in the South, Pitt in the Northeast.

Thanks for your suggestions, I’ll look into all of those schools.

National Merit finalist? If so:

Are you saying that your parents won’t pay ONE DIME for your college? What do they expect you to do after you graduate? Did they go to college? How do they expect you to pay for college? Are they aware that you can’t just borrow all the costs???

You need HUGE merit…not just some merit.

Alabama would give you free tuition plus 2500 per year for eng’g or computer science…and you’d get a 5500 loan, but you’d still need more money. How much can you earn during the school year and during the summer?

I sent in my Early Action Common Application to Purdue, Drexel, and University of Chicago,

???

What’s going on? Why would you apply to these schools when your parents won’t pay for them? There’s no way that these schools would be affordable.

Did something recently happen? did your parents suddenly say that they won’t pay anything for college? What’s going on?

Something to consider…

Many private schools give out a lot of free money. Even with stats lower than yours, many students get awarded half their tuition or more at schools like Loyola and Marquette. Everyone at Marquette gets an average of $14,000 a year. Literally, everyone. Sometimes, students can get even more.

Look into private schools. Some of them will offer you a lot of money.

“What’s going on? Why would you apply to these schools when your parents won’t pay for them? There’s no way that these schools would be affordable.”

Students sometimes hope that they will be an exception and get a lot of merit money. They aren’t experienced in this, so they give it a shot. The OP is asking for guidance now, so I won’t worry if some reaches were on the list earlier.

ablasco, you should look at the Common Data Set for Marquette. [Common Data Sets | Office of Institutional Research and Analysis | Marquette University](<a href=“Institutional Research and Analysis // Marquette University”>Common Data Sets // Institutional Research and Analysis // Marquette University) Section H shows that 1570 freshmen applied for FA, only 1187 were awarded any.

Erin’s Dad,

That’s so weird! They told me everyone at the open house I went to…

This makes no sense, really. Telling people that “everyone” gets an average of $14k would be senseless.

If some get 0 and some get $$30k, and the average award is $14k, that’s not telling anyone that they should expect around $14k in aid.

Look carefully at the words you posted and you’ll see that they don’t make any sense. So, I doubt that the school worded it like you did. They probably just said something like, “the average award is $14k.”

Back to the OP…

Since parents aren’t paying, then a partial tuiton scholarship won’t be nearly enough. This student needs MORE than full tuition because his loan and student earnings won’t be enough to pay for room, board, books, fees, etc.

If your parents really won’t pay anything you will probably have to apply instate (Texas), find a scholarship that will cover tuition, and commute from home so you don’t have to pay for accommodation. UT Dallas has some good full tuition scholarships which you would probably qualify for if you live in the area.
