Full time status?

I seem to think I’ve seen this defined before, but cannot now find the answer quickly. What constitutes full time status at Tulane? And for what purposes is full-time status required: [ul]* retaining Tulane merit scholarship (DSA in our case) while attending tuition-free “host” college as visiting student?[]staying on parent’s Health Insurance policy? []being able to drop from parent’s Auto Insurance? [li]other?[/ul][/li]S is currently enrolled in 4 classes at Bates. They are on a 1 course = 1 unit system; instead of credit hours. It appears that a mininum of 3 classes constitutes “satisfactory progress toward the degree” at Bates. S is considering dropping back to 3 classes, as he doesn’t like one very crowded course and his not sure what he can replace it with (but is searching).

If full-time status is required for any of the issues above, will meeting the minimum for “satisfactory progress” at the host institution qualify?

I think for health and auto it depends on your carrier. My friend found that the auto required less units then the health.
Is 1 unit equivalent to a 4 credit class or a 3 credit? I would think it would be optimum to have it equivalent to 15 units to keep on track for graduating in 4 yrs. If something is satisfactory progress at one institution I would think it should qualify as such at Tulane. Especially in light of the circumstances.
Is your son commuting till they find him housing? Are there many Tulane freshman at Bates?
Did you have a chance to talk to some of the other Tulane parents. My husband said at D’s school one of the parents said that he heard from someone with knowledge of the New Orleans area that it is likely that the kids should plan to be away for the entire school year. That the city itself will probably not be up and ready to support life even if Tulane itself is ready.

mom60 - The 4credit vs. 3credit info is still unknown. They just don’t do it that way, but I may be able to find out.

There are 12-13 Katrina kids at Bates, some from Loyola and some from Tulane, spread across all grades. S commuted first two days and tomorrow, but now has housing and we hope to move him in, at least a little, tomorrow. All the way by weekend. That will be a relief, just feeling that he is now “in college.” He is deep in studies now, catching up in one class and starting assignments in the other.

I have very different expectations re Tulane/New Orleans based on reports I have seen on the Tulane student blog from someone who was in the Tulane area and several parts of the city; on NPR; and having lived through the major earthquake in Oakland/SF in 1989. That happened in October with major roads collapsed and, while there were still problems in late November, there was huge progress. Tulane says it expects to hold spring term on its campus, and I believe it. If reports I have seen are accurate, hundreds of thousands have had power restored, many roads are fine, TV continues to show the same bad areas over and over. As I sit here, I see a news report that several major hotels have lights on now. I have hope!
