Does your high school nominate students for these kind of scholarships? These scholarships covers full tuition, room and board. Could anyone shed more light how the process works?
What I know that these scholarships are to a particular college. Since it is very competitive process, high school only nominate one kid to one scholarship, no double dipping allowed. Student can not be nominated to a second college as Highschool wants to spread the wealth within same high school to as many students as possible.
Which schools are you talking about? My D was nominated for 1, self nominated for 2, and applied on her own for many more. Most full rides don’t require nomination. They will require outstanding recommendations, however.
There are scholarships like this for certain colleges, like Morehead with UNC or Jefferson with UVA, that high schools nominate students to receive. At my kids’ high schools, you let your college counselor know that you wanted to be nominated for a certain scholarship, then the school picks the nominee. You should ask your child’s college guidance counselor to determine your school’s process.
What colleges are you talking about?
Like everything else it will vary by school. I heard about a few that the school nominates for, but mine didn’t apply to any. Applied to one that used to be school nomination, but now is self nomination (check the box and apply by the fall deadline). Check with college counselor at your child’s school for more information.
Morehead with UN, Jefferson with UVA, and many more like that. Our high school nominates students to receive these awards. Daughter has excellent track records and being considered for one.
I’m not aware of many more like that I’m aware of about 90% of all full rides out there. In any event, if your daughter is already being considered (meaning she’s been nominated), what’s your question?
At our school, you’d have to tell the school that you want to be nominated. I don’t think they’d just randomly nominate someone with no interest in going to that college. I guess they pick who gets the nomination if more than one student is interested.
^^The same is true at my kids’ school. It doesn’t happen until the fall, though. OP, are you saying your daughter has already been nominated? That seems odd.
Daughter is not nominated. Counselor mentioned to her that her school nominated kids. They asked her if she is interested in the process. School will consider her as she has one of the strongest GPA and SATs etc. This information is totally new. based on Naviance etc, we are trying to figure a possible list of the Colleges that she will be applying next year. That is why I asked in original post " Could anyone shed more light how the process works?"
Be aware that just because your school nominates you doesn’t mean the scholarship will come to fruition. Some colleges prefer the school nominated apps probably because it cuts down on their workload. Other schools have you apply and they award merit based on their own methodology. When you say “double dipping”, perhaps you mean the high school will only nominate your child for 1 scholarship, but your child can freely apply to other schools hoping for merit money.
