"Fun" books that you recommend

agree, for me Charlotte Simmons was unfinishable. OTOH, Bonfire of the Vanities is superb.

One of the funniest books ever written is Rosy is My Relative by Gerald Durrell. I believe it is out of print, but well worth the trouble to seek it out.

Although not a “funny” book, another favorite is Jack Finney’s Time and Again.

And even though I resisted reading them for years because bookstores stock them in the romance section, I love anything by Diana Gabaldon, such as Outlander.

I do not read " romances" in general= although I did like The Time Travelers wife & I don’t like " chick flicks" but I really enjoyed the whole Outlander series and would categorize it more as historical fiction/time travel, than strictly romance. My H who reads history but also lots of crime novels like Bangkok 8, read the whole Outlander series as well and enjoyed it ( although he thought there was too much sex)

I also like Gerald Durrell and another scientific author who I highly recommend is A Primate’s Memoir by Robert M. Sapolsky. Fascinating and hilarious at times.

The Jack Reacher series of books by Lee Child are excellent. With the violence in them I guess it could be hard to classify them as “fun”, but I am addicted.

Old Man’s War by John Scalzi – fun and clever science fiction (where old folks get to be reborn as young, attractive, interstellar soldiers!) Also would like to second the earlier recommendation for The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss – fantastic fantasy novel.

I’m with you, wharfrat. I wish I had amnesia so I could reread Confederacy.

The Ascent of Rum Doodle. Forgot the author.:D

Great book. But underrated, I believe.

Another Bill Bryson, David Sedaris fan here.

Greenbroke–forgot the author, but very funny read about a family moving Green Acres style to raise Welsh ponies, as market for ponies drops.

Running with Walker by Robert Hughes–memoir of Chicago family with two sons, one autistic, doesn’t sound fun, it is

I Know This Much is True, by Wally Lamb–long but you will sorry to when it ends, great book.

Hugh Jackman was supposedly making a Jack Reacher film tuitiondad- I am not really that familiar with his work, but I can’t get that casting.
Maybe Russell Crowe if he was a little younger and taller.
I went through a mystery kick and liked the Dunning novels as well Lee Childs books . For literate mysteries I would also recommend Sarah Caudwell.
Other authors who aren’t PC, but are very good are Dorothy Sayers ( Lord Peter Whimsy) & P C Wodehouse ( Wooster & Jeeves)
You have to rent Hugh Lauries & Stephen Frys take on Wodehouse ( especially if you love House)

The show is not really related to the book except that the main character is a forensic anthropologist. The show is quite good–a good cast of supporting characters, and the TV Bones is more quirky than the Book Bones.

I can’t believe that he and his buddy actually hiked (parts of) the Applachian Trail! They seemed so unprepared…made me think that maybe I could do it too.

I met someone who knows Bryson and he was quite derivative of his take on how much he actually hiked- but I love Bryson anyway- very engaging writer.

Aaron Elkins writes mysteries with a forensic anthropologist as the main character, & he also has a series with a museum curator as the protagonist.

Frankly since my D is taking AP lit this semester, anything I read seems like fun reading- although she is currently reading Heart of Darkness which I really like- but it isn’t a “light” read.

…he was quite derivative of his take on how much he actually hiked

All right, EK–what does this actually mean?

I highly recommend the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich. They really do make you laugh out loud. My family can always tell when I’m reading one of them. Of course, I always have to tell them stories about Grandma. She is hilarious! They say that laughter is the best medicine, and these books fit the bill.

Have you ever imagined who would play the characters if they made it into a movie?!

I thought it was laugh out loud funny. The sheer absurdity of Ignatius J. Reilly as a character was just amazing in my opinion. Burma Jones, Lana Lee and other characters are unforgettable.

If you like Janet Evanovich, you’ll like Hailey Lind. If anything, Annie Kincaid is even funnier than Stephanie Plum, and the other characters are really engaging, too.

Onion’s “Our Big Dumb World”.

Another vote for Bill Bryson–he’s even funnier in person. Also David Sedaris.
I like the Evanovich books, and I’ve read all of the Stephanie Plum series. At this point, they just aren’t as funny as they were before. How much crazier can Grandma get?

sports illustrated: swimsuit edition

i cant seem to put it down :)

picked up this interesting, odd, book off of a clearance rack for 3.98–might not be for everyone, but it was a quick, interesting, disturbing? kind of story.

the vanishing act of esme lennox

funny quick read where you will see yourself in the pages

I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron
