Every Christmas , I give DVDs to the family and it is a tradition for us to share them and send the day watching them on Christmas day.
This year seems pretty weak with selection ( didn’t seem all that appealing in theaters either the past year )
Any suggestions ? We tend to like comedy , nothing too heavy or violent

Are you only looking for movies released this year?

Not necessarily…I have been known to dig up some oldies for fun too

One of my favorites is The Lady Vanishes- which is Hitchcock, but a comic thriller, not horror.
Id also recommend Joyeux Noel, which isnt a comedy, but a satisfyingly warm story about the WWI Christmas truce.

Thanks, emeraldkity…just checked them out and ordered them on Amazon. I think movies make great stocking stuffers …our day is not spent with extended family so this has become a big part of how we enjoy our day…along with food :)

Some of my odd favorites: Waking Ned Devine, Little Miss Sunshine, The Dish and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. And if there are girls involved: Pride and Prejudice (Colin Firth edition).

Not sure if the family would enjoy watching, but my son is taking Italian (for the first time) in college, and his cousin got him some Italian movies with English subtiitles for his birthday. My son thought that was great - and helpful. Gina Lollobrigida helped his Italian, I’m sure ;)

I have to mention my favorite: Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. One of those quirky cult classics. Family-friendly, too. Lots of laughs and lots of quotable lines. Our family has it memorized.

If it’s out, Pitch Perfect (Anna Kendrick from Up in the Air) – some very funny scenes.

Or maybe some older movies that may not be comedies but aren’t heavy or violent:

Across the Universe – I watched it again on Amazon Prime – loved it just as much as the first time – great Beatles music

3:10 to Yuma. Russell Crowe, recent film with an old Western feel.

Julie & Julia (makes you want to cook, blog, or fall in love)

The Queen (Helen Mirren)

Pitch Perfect comes out in mid December depending on when you are doing the shopping.

I always thought super troopers was funny.

Being There with Peter sellers

^^ Great movie.

We like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Napoleon Dynamite, *Bridget Jones’s Diary/i, and *Best in Show/i.

The funniest movie I’ve ever seen is This is Spinal Tap although it’s not what I’d call a “family comedy.”

These aren’t exactly comedies, but they’re heartwarming with plenty of cute/funny moments: two Pixar flicks, WALL-E and Up.

Hmm. My D was just saying that Up was the “saddest animated movie ever.” Haven’t seen it myself though. I was going to suggest “Buckaroo Banzai”-strange and funny, even though your kids won’t recognize most of the actors.

Home Alone is is a pretty interesting movie… I guess the 2nd one would be best because its during Christmas

Sordid Lives
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Cold Comfort Farm
Harold and Maude

An absolutely great family comedy is What’s Up, Doc? Directed by Peter Bogdanovch and starring Barbra Streisand and Ryan O’Neal, who was just coming off the huge hit Love Story (to explain the ending). With Madeleine Kahn and a whole bunch of terrific actors. Just checked and realized it’s now out in Blu-Ray so I ordered it for myself.

I agree with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

If you’re talking big screen in the house and want something to change the kids mental worlds, try 2001.

I love Up. There is a sad aspect to it, but it’s also beautiful and heartwarming. I’m a huge fan of Despicable Me if we’re talking Pixar. It’s just an adorable, funny, family-friendly movie.

There were some good, fun movies this year: Avengers, Hunger Games, The Dark Knight Rises. All are PG-13 so the violence is tame for you hopefully. 21 Jumpstreet was hilarious.

I love Wall-E and Despicable Me.

Squirrel?!

The Princess Bride
The Bird Cage
Les Choristes - French with English subtitles. Some sad parts but happy ending. No violence
