Funny and/or cheering things to boost the spirits

I think many of us could use this, in the depths of this crazy, brutal winter. So I’ll start (and hope this thread doesn’t get deleted):

Do you like Prairie Home Companion? Their annual joke show is alway a hoot. This year’s was a week-and-a-half ago, and you can listen to it here:
[A Prairie Home Companion for January 22, 2011 | American Public Media](<a href=“Past Shows | A Prairie Home Companion”>Past Shows | A Prairie Home Companion)

From the intro: … the one about the coyote who came on board the plane carrying a dead raccoon and the attendant says you can’t bring that dead raccoon on the plane and he says “It’s carrion”.

On this page, you can browse lots of jokes (by category) and listen to previous joke shows:
[Pretty Good Jokes | A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor | American Public Media](http://www.publicradio.org/applications/formbuilder/projects/joke_machine/joke_page.php)

From the intro to the 2008 show: How do you keep your husband from reading your e-mail?
You put it in a file and you label it “instruction manual”.

Hope this helps.
In terms of movies, if you like Will Ferrell at all (I didn’t like some of his earlier stuff, but have enjoyed him recently), his most recent one “The Other Guys” is quite funny.

And if you enjoy Monty Python, watching their movies again always makes me laugh.

I’m sitting here re-listening to this year’s Joke Show while writing this (and a previous post), and I’m already in a better mood!

Other thoughts:

 1. Put on The Beach Boys’ “Endless Summer” and crank up the volume.
 2. Read “S*** My Dad Says” by Justin Halpern - absolutely hilarious!

I bookmarked a thread started by Emeraldkity4, planning to return to respond, and it poofed so I hope it’s okay if I post my suggestions here instead (there are no links to anger TPTB.)

DVDs to borrow or rent: Auntie Mame (Rosalind Russell version – not the remake); the “Tammy” movies w/ Leslie Nielsen (how low brow can I get?); Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (love the paint colors scene); Doris Day movies (especially The Glass Bottom Boat); most Danny Kaye movies; and older British TV comedies, including: Good Neighbors (with Felicity Kendal and Penelope Keith), To the Manor Born (also w/ Penelope Keith), and Keeping Up Appearances (with the terrific Patricia Routledge.)

Youtube is a great place to spend some free time – check out
Anita Renfroe’s Momsense and Wrinkled Ladies. I just ran across some Sinbad clips that are great (see the one from Montreal.) You can find some old Bill Cosby, too (favorite here is “Chocolate Cake.”) Check for outtakes from Carol Burnett, Dick Van Dyke, or any of your favorite old shows.

Other things that help me: Vicks Vaporub, the scent of oranges and peppermint (together or separately), taking extra B-complex vitamins, Librax, hot soaks with Epsom salt or Calgon, and Lindt extra dark chocolate truffles. I’ve also learned to drop everything to take advantage of rare sunny & relatively warm days. We had one last Saturday and I persuaded dh to forget the chore list for an hour and just sit out in the backyard soaking in the sunshine. Dh tanned, I turned pink but I don’t care - the mood lift lasted for three days.

At one point I was bemoaning that we hadn’t probably indocrinated my son in Monty Python classics. He informed me that all the best bits are on youtube anyway. For one best bit - google “monty python airplane pilots youttube”

This isn’t really a joke but it cracked me up yesterday in the middle of that snow storm.
I saw on the news that they caught a burglar who had broken in to a home when they found a cell phone charging in the victim’s home. It didn’t belong to the homeowners.
The burglar had decided to CHARGE his PHONE while he was burglarizing a home! Ha ha ha ha ha…

and then forgot to take it when he left…ha ha ha ha…

OMG, EPTR - that’s got to make it on to the list of all-time best Stupid Criminal Tricks!

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I can’t make it very many pages in a David Sedaris book without laughing out loud.

Knitting really calms me down and mellows me out.

And I really need to try those Lindt Extra-Dark chocolate truffles that silpat mentioned! (and silpat, I started this thread because that other one was deleted)

This keeps making me laugh, maybe it will cheer someone else as well.

I’ve been having some serious medical issues and am doing better but the journey continues. I was looking up my new medication on-line and this was the first thing that popped up,

“…used to treat chronic adrenal disease in ferrets.”

Just to be clear, I am not a ferret. But somehow it’s cheered me up. When I think of my new medication, I think, “Well, it’s me and the ferrets…”

If you have a son, a dog and a Wii (and even if you don’t), search “ultimate fail on Wii” on Youtube.

My dad’s all-time favorite–a spoonful of ice cream (gelatto or sorbetto can be substituted). It is a nice little snack with little guilt or calories; the carton lasts a LOOONNNNNGGGGG time this way! :)
