all toys when compared to Gibbon’s THE HISTORY OF THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE (published in the course of 1780’s; over 3,000 pages long). this mounmental prose is twice the length of the Holy Bible and covers roughly 1500 years of history from the time of caesar augustus to the crescendo of the collapse, the great drama in which the world rocked with its thousands of years of history, in the sack of Constantinople in 1453.

1453:Rome ceased to exist (davies).

i myself only read about 300 pages, but is was so difficult. usually old books are difficult because of the language. but not this one. this one is difficult because it MAKES u think too much. the author spent over a decade researching and thinking and thinking and thinking and thinking on the subject. every page is written with tremednous amount of care. there is no reprieve from meticulous study of the ancient sources, their backgrounds, the authors’ backgrounds, the probability of certain ancient claims, etc.

if u hate history, just go read the entire garfield.

it’s okay. i read the first half of republic and found it so boring AND unrealistic that i just read garfield, my favourite. garfield is the mounmental comic strip ever composed in the history of literature. it is full of amzing characters like jon who is so amazingly tenacious in not kicking out a misbehaving cat.

ive read a lot of the books suggested and think theyre witty/amusing/ironic but not laugh-out-loud funny. i think everything by david sedaris is HILARIOUS, though… hes amazing… if you want to laugh, definartely check him out
i also find the devil wears prada and the shopaholics series are really amusing if youre a girl and into that sort of thing…(theyre beach/chic lit type books … very light, but fun)

HHGTTG - The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
Not only is it the funniest/wittiest/coolest book I have read, but it also taught me the meaning of life, the universe and everything :)
