Furnishing a student apartment in Boston?

Any parents with students in Boston? I’m looking for suggestions to help son furnish his apartment at BU. Desks, beds, and dressers are needed (I believe couches have already been found) as well as any creative thoughts to help three sophomore males set up their new living situation.

thanks

I would check Craig’s list. Also, many of the colleges have huge yard sales and exchanges on campus around move-in day.

S also furnished much of his apartment with Craigslist. Target & IKEA are also great places to pick up inexpensive furnishings. Stress to the student that these are TEMPORARY & needn’t last another few decades, as they will likely be sold when your child moves on, to another school, a furnished place, or finds something s/he likes better.

Yep, mine shopped Craigslist and were also lucky recipients of some of their college neighbors cast off furniture and some old stuff we donated.
Def. don’t spend a lot of money on really nice stuff. Some of it will be unrecognizable by years end, lol.

S1 and roommates got a couple of great chests of drawers fr. a Salvation Army/Goodwill type thrift store.

Besides Target and Ikea, WalMart has some furniture too. We got S2 a futon fr. WalMart.
It’s heading into it’s third yr. at college…still intact!

Thanks all. I found a list of thrift stores from the BU housing site, but couldn’t find any good student classifieds, thinking many students ending their lease would have lots of junk in need of a new home. Am I missing something? We will locate Target, Ikea, and Walmart, too.

Here’s a link for MIT furniture exchange. Your son will need to show his BU id to get in and make purchases. Good Luck!

Wonderful, FLAmama! Just what I’m looking for and the dates are perfect. I’ll pass this on to my son.

This page has a ton of resources and links as well. I love Boston! Best college city ever!

Be careful with couches and mattresses; there have been bedbugs in Boston.

If you really want to do it on the cheap, wait until the last weekend of August thru the first weekend of September. That is when all the leases change over and everyone moves. Whatever does not make it on the moving truck, ends up on the sidewalk and it is free for anyone. Two years ago, when S was moving, I was assigned the task of sitting with the furniture in front of the apartment (since everyone is moving at the same time, you often get out of your apartment, but need to wait for your apartment to be available) and guard it. I was simply amazed by the numbers of people walking the street looking for free furniture. August 31st is the main day - on a Tuesday this year.

DON’T EVER TAKE A USED MATTRESS FROM THE STREET OR ANYWHERE ELSE. Bedbugs are getting to be an enormous problem. Daughter just had an awful time this summer in her college town, where she took a class and worked. It is a terrible thing to get rid of them and all of the stuff you have to do each time (three in six weeks) the exterminators need to come. Used mattresses are an absolute must not do!

Microbiologist here with grad school son…

NO used mattresses!!! Bedbugs are rampant.

We bought a new mattress and foundation for our daughter. She got the rest through the Craigslist in one day (but we were there with a car to help her move the stuff)

Our S used Ikea last year but it is outside the city. A car or van would be needed. Their delivery is outrageous. Target works. Good idea to wait and pick up stuff from kids moving out. As say Aug. 31 is the big day but if you are moving stuff you want you need someone to guard it. Can’t leave anything unattended or it will be scooped up.
