My son will be living close to downtown area. Where is a good place for him to buy a mattress.
Amazon and get a bed in a box!!!
Costco has them this time of year.
Before my son made his move, he bought his mattress in our hometown (DFW) at Mattress Firm and they delivered it from their warehouse in The new town south of Austin.

He’s going to need to lay down on several beds to make a decision. Can’t order online.
@Thelma2 , I’ve never ordered from Mattress Firm, I’ve always been wary of those stores, but I suppose there is no reason to be like that. I’ll have him go to the ones here. That is a good idea!
He can also go into a store, try out varieties and brands, then go home and price same/similar ones online.
@conmama it’s sort of a joke here in Austin but there are mattress stores EVERYWHERE, including literally next door to each other. There is a local (only in Austin and San Antonio) chain called Factory Mattress that has very good reviews, so if he can find a couple of choices in person, he might try ordering from them.
I think I will always buy a mattress in a box off of Amazon from now on. Cheaper and just as comfortable as our $$$ Tempurpedic.
@conmama
I just was talking to my son and asking about his delivery. The warehouse arranged the time with him in his town and it all went great. He reminded me though of when my in-law’s went shopping there recently and didn’t fare as well. It seems Mattress Firm is carrying less name brands, except the high end, and more of their own brand plus the memory foam over traditional mattresses.
Last year, we purchased three mattresses and box spring sets from Ashley Furniture. We didn’t notice until un-packaging, that the mattresses are only one sided. They cannot be flipped over to use the other side. While these particular ones are not used daily, I am not excited about their potential lack of longevity the need to be replaced, so beware when shopping for mattresses, that some MFG’s are doing this.
Thanks all! These are great options for him t know about, especially the one store in Austin that @cgpm59 mentioned.
Most beds are no flip now. DH and I just recently purchased a flippable one that is a latex mattress. It cost a pretty penny, but I can’t wait to get it. They make each one after the order.
I have a terrible back and can’t wait to sleep on this bed!
Lots of online mattress options. DD loves her Saatva, and we have a Bed in the box that is good, but probably needs replacing after all these years. Online companies deliver to your door and are vacuum packed; just open them up and they poof up!
We have purchased three mattresses from Mattress Firm with no issues. Kids went to the stores, tried a few, and picked one. Just be prepared to deal with the used car type of salesperson. Ridiculous.
Last mattresss…we went, and were looking for the on sale Serta or Sealy. Those were garbage…truly terrible. The salesperson was obnoxious and basically told us we were being cheap. So…we just walked to the front of the store with the intention of leaving. We heard “Lady, lady…I think I can talk to my manager and do something for you.”
He took us to a $1200 set which miraculously was able to be reduced to…$600. Just plain ridiculous.
Anyway…it’s a great mattress. But geez…
He’s down there now.mi told him about Factory Mattress @cpgm59. Also, @thumper1 I warned him about Sealy and Serta!
