I have been wanting to replace a loveseat, chair and ottoman I have in my bedroom. They were purchased 20 yrs ago at Sears as a temporary measure for our family room. These couches are not even made out of wood. The frame is some sort of plastic. Strangely they are fairly comfortable. When we moved 12 yrs ago they ended up in my room with some slipcovers I made for them. The covers are faded and worn threadbare in spots. The chair cover has a huge rip. We keep saying we should replace but they continue to sit in our room and look like an eyesore.
I like the simple Pottery Barn/Restoration Hardware look. I would like a slipcovered simple roll armed loveseat and chair. We don’t have many furniture stores in town.
Looking for suggestions on how to buy and if someone has had success finding that type of sofa for less. I can’t imagine buying furniture online. I would be willing to drive to Los Angeles if someone has store suggestions.
My H is no help since he would be happy with a 400 dollar sofa from Costco.

mom60…not much in our area. I bought a sofa and loveseat years ago from Ethan Allen in Ventura. It was not cheap but has lasted forever…I bought a sofa and loveseat from Lands End a few years back. I loved the fact that they came with slipcovers and you could order new covers later when the first set was worn or when redecorating. Fast forward a few years. I called Lands End and they no longer make the furniture or sell the slipcovers. Great…thanks for that!
If you get a catalogue Ballard Designs makes a similar product. Pottery Barn at LaCumbre mall by you maybe? Pottery Barn isn’t cheap either though.
I was in LA recently at the furniture mart with some friends who own a retail store. You don’t know anyone that has connections down there do you? Stuff is half off retail but you have to know someone to get in. I’d never been…had no idea. We had to show ID, obtain badges, etc. to visit the showrooms.

Sorry - I’m right there with your H at Costco! I have kids in college…

I have a Clayton Marcus sofa that I bought a good 15 - 18 years ago or so. Shopped around till I found the style and fabric I wanted, then called an outlet in North Carolina and got it for about half price. Don’t know how far they ship, though.

My limited experience with furniture is bought a Hancock & Moore leather sofa and chair + ottoman for family room 15 years ago and it gets a lot of wear and still looks great. Bought a cheap leather loveseat and sofa for the basement that felt great when new but it fell apart and we gave away the sofa.

If you really want a challenge, try to buy furniture made in the U.S.

Binx-The problem with my H is once he gets it in the house it will stay here forever. I would finally like something I picked based on what I like versus solely on cost. Cost is of course a big consideration.
I used to have a good source for good prices on high quality furniture. Unfortunately the couple divorced and I stayed friends with the unconnected spouse.
I like Pottery Barn but I prefer to spend less if I can.

I love Pottery Barn too…but DON"T like the prices. For a second home/rental, we ended up going with slipcovered furniture form IKEA and it has help up well over the years. 'I wouldn’t call this high quality furniture - but it’s a good buy for sure.

The price at Ikea is certainly good. It might be worth a drive.
Ebeeee do you know anyone who has ordered for Ballard Designs. I don’t know if I could order a sofa that I haven’t sat on.

Amen sister! We may be married to twins separated at birth.

I was in Chicago last weekend. When there poked at and sat in some upholstered and slip covered pieces at Pottery Barn. Very comfortable, but it did not seem that the wood frames were wrapped sufficiently well to avoid wear and abrasion of the fabric.

I do know people who have ordered accent pieces from Ballard Designs and are pleased, but no one who has ordered furniture that would get the kind of ongoing use that a sofa would receive.

I have a friend who has living room furniture from Ikea. She recently replaced the “upholstery” (panels attached with Velcro and new wraps for the cushions) just because she wanted a different color. She is happy with it.

I have a soft spot for Mitchel Gold…not the most price conscious approach.

Mafool-From the bit of research I have done Mitchell Gold makes some of the PB and Restoration Hardware sofas. It looks like Mitchell Gold has a store in Los Angeles.

Because I know that I will live with any furniture purchase FOREVER (see quote above), I am very concerned about construction quality. So I wonder if the Mitchell Gold designs are cost-reduced in the wrappings of the frames. Purely conjecture: I have no direct knowledge. Our Restoration Hardware has closed, so I haven’t fondled their furniture lately.

Ahem…married to an engineer. NOTHING leaves this house unless it totally falls apart.

That being said…furniture is MY domain in this house. DH comes along for the ride but he seldom has any input…he just says FINE.

Re: that furniture in your bedroom. Is the room THAT huge that it can accommodate a loveseat and a chair and ottoman? If so, I agree with the ikea idea. The reality is that this bedroom/living room furniture isn’t going to get the same use as your family room furniture. In fact, we have a very nice rocking chair in our bedroom…it could be made of cardboard…it serves as a repository for clothes that haven’t been put away.

What about looking at Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware…you might hit a sale. Also, look at some of your local furniture places. As I recall, February is a great time to buy furniture, that’s when the big sales are.

Have fun!!

Good points, Thumper. I operate defensively: while a piece of furniture may not have a lot of wear in its initial location, there’s no telling where it will end up. But short of a fire, it will be with me forever! (The sleeper sofa I bought for our first apartment was in our kitchen-sitting room with a mass-market slipcover for 10 years until I could send it off with DS).

I think we all married the same man! He grumps I’m too picky. Well, yeah, I know it’s going to be here longer than we are. Price trumps everything too, which drives me insane. Re-arranging furniture gives him the ultimate stress. I’d be ok with him not caring; my mom was responsible for all house deocrating/furniture/ stuff and my dad never said a word.

I am looking forward to my kids getting their own apartments so I have a good excuse to ditch a lot of yucky furniture. Did manage to rid the basement of a pool table this year when S rented a house with college friends. Only restriction: I never see it again.

Thumper- Restoration Hardware has an outlet about 45 minutes south of here. When I bought my lamp I looked at some of the sofas. They were very comfortable but most of them were white. It is going to be my first stop when we get the chance to head down south. What I don’t like about the RH stuff is that it doesn’t appear that they sell replacement slipcovers like PB does.
Most of our local furniture stores have closed. There are still a few small places that don’t seem to have much.
I have a huge master bedroom. We never did much decorating and it shows. The chair will rarely get sat in. The loveseat is where I sit when I am working on my laptop. I use the ottoman as my desk.
I have nice furniture in my living room that I purchased through our friends store. It was expensive even at a huge discount. Lucky I really like it since I know I am having it till I head for the retirement home.

My husband thinks I am way to picky. We also have many blank walls in our house. We can never agree on any art work. He is one of those who could buy his artwork from one of the vendors on the side of the road.

My husband is the opposite, but we have the same end result. He has a degree from an insanely well respected art school. Nothing that we can possibly afford is good enough to buy.

Mafool- I guess it depends on their area of expertise. My H is a builder and he built our house. The foundation of our house is so well built it isn’t going anywhere. We also have such good insulation that even when it is howling outside we don’t hear a peep. He also had me drive around looking at an insane amount of roofs when we built our house. So while the nuts and bolts of my house are top notch the accessories don’t interest him.

Remember to give your H only 2 or 3 choices (all of which you like) and that way he will think that HE made the choice.

Did you try Macy’s furniture? They have a website.

I have always had a difficult time buying furniture because I have Pottery Barn taste but a lesser budget. When I go in alot of the bigger box furniture stores, the stuff looks (pardon me) like yuck! Overstuffed, bulky, lumpy, dull. I have yet to find some thing between Pottery Barn and a step up from Ikea that suits my taste.

That said, depending how much use this furniture would get that you are looking for, if it’s not too heavy take a look at some of the Ikea furniture. Some of their club type chairs and such are very affordable and IMO, good looking.

Don’t buy the ultralight couches/loveseats etc. from LLBean… Not comfortable because they are just foam, and when you sit on them, they sag. Just a FYI from a sadder but wiser LLBean fan.
