Future Bison?

Hi, my name is Dantley and I am current going into my junior year of highschool. I live in southern California and I play basketball and have a few colleges intrested in me for scholarships. As far as basketball I really would like to attend Bucknell University however i know nothing about Bucknell as far as campus life. I want to go to a college with a really loud student section, somewhere where people come out and support their team. How is fan support at Bucknell? Also, what is there to do out in Lewisburg, PA other than school. Lastly, what can I do to be recruited by BU?

Bucknell has quite a few students from Cali and you would probably fit in quite well–if you are a very good student. As far as basketball goes–there is nothing better than playing in the Patriot League for Bucknell in Sojka Pavilion. Sojka is modern and seats 4,000 and because the basketball team has been successful-lots of people support the men’s team. It’s a loud place to play–and the student body support this past season was great! You should go to the website to see where the Bison play hoops-but more importantly go to the Bucknell website to check out Bucknell academically. While you will will have to be a very strong basketball player to get “recruited” you will probably have to be a stronger student to get admitted. I would think that you would want to attend the Bucknell summer basketball camp in order for the coaches can see you play in person. Good Luck! Go Bison!

Thanks alot. But I am African American, is there any rascism out there? And my freshmen and sophmore year i got a 2.75 gpa, do I still have a chance of getting into Bucknell?

Hey, ParkerC. Does your school have the POSSE Program? Most of my fellow Bucknellians from California are in that program which helped them get into Bucknell.

My sister goes to Bucknell, and the impression I get from that school is that it’s really WASP-y, and conservative which leads me to believe that there is a lot of racism there.

^ I’m sorry, but WASP-y and conservative does not mean you are racist! My rising senior D2 is a WASP and anything but a racist. She was also a one of only a few WASP’s on her freshman hall.

Bucknell does have many white, affluent students. And my D2 has sometimes wished for more diversity. Also, the greek system is strong at Bucknell. My D did not join a sorority.

But she has had a great education and very good opportunities and experiences. She also has many new friends including white, African american, Asian, gay, straight, Jewish, Muslim, greeks and non-greeks (meaning frat and sorority) friends. In other words, a diversity of friends.

And ParkerC, students at Bucknell really support their basketball team! I think you would find it a welcoming community.

As a current student I can tell you I’ve never encountered any racism. I’ve known a number of students in the POSSE program and I believe most of them would agree Bucknell is a VERY accepting place.

However, I can’t imagine a 2.75 would be acceptable to the school. The good thing is that you still have a year to bring your GPA up. Bucknell does not put a huge emphasis on sports to the point that it would take a student with that low of a GPA for athletics. If you can do really well this year and bring it over a 3.0 you might have a chance?..
