Future of UCB and UCLA

UCLA and UCB have long been thought of as elite academic institutions. However, with the huge funding cuts that have taken place recently, I’m wondering what everyones thoughts are on what place the UC’s will occupy in the future? Will they maintain their current identity, or will they take on a new role in higher education?

Both universities are raising a ton of money through international tuition. I think for fall 2013 UCLA expects to raise around 120m from international students, and with tuition for instate residents, it’s largely offset the cuts is received from the state. Similar arguments hold for Berkeley.

Although UCLA admits instate students at a lower rate than Berkeley (and admits international and OOS at a higher rate) in terms of raw numbers, they admit about the same number of California residents.

Both universities will continue to be elite for the foreseeable future. They might even try to privatize to some degree (UCLA’s Anderson SOM is already trying to do this. If it does, I expect Haas to follow.)
