Future of UCLA and UCB

UCLA and UCB have long been thought of as elite academic institutions. However, with the huge funding cuts that have taken place recently, I’m wondering what everyones thoughts are on what place the UC’s will occupy in the future? Will they maintain their current identity, or will they take on a new role in higher education?

This is a repost of some1 else’s locked thread and I was curious to see what others might have to say about this.

bumpity bump

It does appear that recent California graduate stipend offers are resulting in some prospective graduate students going elsewhere.

I think they will, 5 UCs are in the top 50 US News for the last 5 years(even with budget problem).

Selectivity-based rankings will tend to favor the most selective UCs over other public universities due to the fact that California has 32 state universities, resulting in the most selective ones taking narrow slices of “top students” from the pool of students going on to four year schools. For comparison, Arizona has only 3 state universities, so each takes a wide swath of students from the pool of students going on to four year schools, hurting their selectivity-based rankings (although the “top students” at UA and ASU would be “top students” anywhere).

However, as far as “maintaining their current identity”, there may have some changes in higher education overall in the future, which could affect all or most universities, including the UCs.
