hasnt Medil been in high regard for a while?

spincut,

Yes, Medill has been in high regard for a long time; McCormick, however, doesn’t come to some people’s mind when they think of good engineering schools. I think part of it has to do with other well-known programs/schools like Medill, Kellogg, music, theater overshadowing the engineering program a bit.

McMormick has 4 programs in top 10 and 7 programs in top 20; I am sure some people are surprised to learn this.

yeah, that is suprising sam.

there really is no need for a graduate ranking of j-schools.
Northwestern, Columbia, Missouri and Berkeley are far and away the greatest grad journalism schools.
Of those, only missourri and NU have undergrad programs.

Kellogg has been ranked #1 biz school for the past 4 years in a row by Business Week (worldwide rankings)… i can see how this overshadows McCormicks… but seeing these rankings makes me think higher of mcCormick.

Dont forget to mention the med and law schools, which are both top 20 nationally I think (especially med)

The other good news is that all of the programs are going up in the rankings. I think the law school jumped 7 places in law school rankigns over the past two years.

The reason why i like NU so much is because it is already a great university, but still seems to be growing and getting better, faster than any of its peers.

Sam, thanks. I think this is the list they posted in 2003 (or 2001?) with no updates. I guess they rank some programs once every several years.

I saw the list, so you might want to delete it because I’ve heard US News cancel the accounts of people who post their rankings for free.

I’m not sure that you care you could be banned though, right? :)

Don’t think they can track me down. Sorry that the list hasn’t been updated. My guess is US News only updates annually the ones that draw the most attention.

The City,

The Law and Med schools are indeed in top 20–10th and 20th, respectively. The law school didn’t really jump that much; it was 12th in 1994 and has been in high regard for quite a while. It’s not WashU. I personally don’t believe any school can jump 7 places in 2 or 3 years. The US News ranks limited # of programs and NU’s well-known programs like communications, theater, film, music won’t be found there.

i disagree, i originally applied out of high school to engineering programs back in 2001, not a while ago, but according to you it would have been even less regarded then (in retorspect this was a mistake because of the higher selectivity) and Northwestern was my top choice at the time.

Sam Lee, the USNWR is only out to sell magazines. If their rankings changed at the rate universities actually evolve, it would not make much sense publishing the rankings annually. It wouldn’t even make sense publishing the rankings once every 5 years. Departments…an most certainly universities, do not evolve that quickly. That is why if you look at the peer assessment score, you get a much more accurate picture. The peer assessment scores have barely changed over the last 22 years. All schools with peer assessment scores of 4.8-5.0 are top 5, those twih peer assessment scores between 4.3 and 4.7 are top 10 or top 15. Those with peer assessment scores between 4.0 and 4.2 are top 25 or top 30 etc…But like I said, the USNWR is out to seel magazines. So they have to spice things up annually. Do you know that the College rankings that come out in August and the graduate school rankings that comes out in April make up over 40% of the USNWR’s revenues? Talk about motive to change things around.

Yea…the college ranking changes a lot more. Didn’t UPenn jump to number 4, ahead of Stanford last year?? That was pretty surprsing. Now people are waiting to see what the drama will be for this year.

Don’t forget that Northwestern’s School of Education and Social Policy (SESP) has been ranked #6 best Education (graduate) school in the country. Go SESP!
