Fyre Festival Nightmare for Concert Goers

They seriously need to get stoned on weed, heavily drunk, and/or tripping on some serious psychedelics BEFORE planning their second attempt…

I have to say, if they didn’t say what they were promoting, I’d have assumed it was just young, thin pretty women in skimpy clothing frolicking in the water.

The ad was very slick, but sadly no shark in it or warning of shark-infested waters. Maybe that’s being saved for next year.

The Fyre Festival hashtag on Twitter is some of the most entertaining snark I’ve seen in ages. This guy marketed a festival that didn’t exist and people actually bought tix. It’s mind boggling.

I go to Coachella every year and It’s apparent to me just how much work goes into the logistics of a festival. And at least Goldenvoice has infrastructure to build on. The fact that this bro and his buddies thought they could " do this and be legends", is ridiculous.

I am with you. The successful festivals have a corporate staff of year round production and marketing employees and a huge staff of volunteers and they work at the festivals all year round. I’ve met a couple “kids/early middle agers” who work for these companies. IMO this one had warning signals from the onset as goNoles85 points out.

It is amazing what rich, spoiled people will spend their hard inherited money on.

At least they didn’t have any bad acid there.

I agree! I also looked for youtube videos of people who were there and found this one.

“They’re only feeding us bread and cheese, and it’s, like, not even toasted!”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLdTlr4rrcU

The kid looks scared for his life! Can you imagine these people on Survivor?

And they were served the food in styrofoam containers!!! Oh the tragedy of it all.

Actually, the styrofoam really sucks - for the environment. All the festivals I can think of try to be very environmentally conscious. Festivals produce a bunch of waste.

That’s really unfair. Just because they could afford to go doesn’t mean they inherited the money. I read about one guy who scrimped and saved his allowance for weeks to afford this.

To be fair, considering they paid between $450 to $12k for what was supposed to be an experience marketed as a fun weekend event at an exotic locale with gourmet food and luxurious A/Ced villas…they were essentially ripped off.

Ha! They essentially took a major hit of it the moment they arrived and found out they’ve been had with marketing smoke and mirrors.

What a fiasco. A super upscale music festival doesn’t even appeal to me. Woodstock was the greatest music festival of all time and a ticket cost $18 in advance and $24 at the door.

Relative to many people in the world, you might well be considered rich. And your discretionary spending might appear to others to be questionable. Okay with you if others rip you off with false promises about what your money will buy? And that’s okay since your “fun” expenditures are that of a “rich, spoiled” person?

It doesn’t appeal to me either, but what that guy and the other promoters did to these people was indefensible.

ETA: I deleted my agreement with another comment since we don’t agree; his comment was apparently sarcastic.

@cobrat , agree they were ripped off. I don’t think anyone is arguing that. What made me laugh is that the guy added that the bread, *like, wasn’t even toasted * in describing how bad things were and looked like he was truly in fear. As bad as it was with no running water, no electricity, no bathrooms, etc., it’s still what most of us would call CAMPING.

“A fool and hi money are soon parted.”

If it were marketed (and priced) as camping as described above, that would be one thing. It wasn’t.

I suspect anyone writing on this thread would be complaining just as loudly if they signed up for and paid for a vacation that was marketed as having nice accommodations and lovely meals, only to be given a tent , a mattress (and only if yours wasn’t stolen before you got there) cold cheese sandwiches, etc. I can imagine the reaction to being basically told not to act like a spoiled rich person, and just view it as a camping trip.

I have no idea who regulates these things but shouldn’t this McFarland guy face some kind of legal action? Can you just advertise a bunch of BS, take peoples’s money and then not deliver? I don’t think you can. And what about the safety risk of bringing all those people to a remote island without an adequate infrastructure to support basic standards of living? Seems to me this guy should answer to someone.

^^^^I totally agree.

Apparently, this isn’t McFarland’s first ‘ripping off rich young people’ rodeo. He was simply kicking it up a notch from his previous grifts: http://www.esquire.com/entertainment/a54803/billy-mcfarland-fyre-festival-organizer/ . Since he didn’t face ruinous lawsuits after his past scams, he probably didn’t see any downside to failing (and walking away with the money) this time.

The difference is that this time, his victims faced extreme physical discomfort (relative to what they know and expected) as well as a certain amount of public mockery. Those will ensure a big-ole round of lawsuits. My guess is that McFarland is still going to walk away with a hefty profit though. The island venue means funds have probably already made their way into untraceable Bahamian or other offshore bank accounts.

Catch him if you can…
