GAH Major blues

So, I’m a sophomore working on my B.S. in Petroleum Engineering (PETE) here at UAF in Alaska. When i first came to college, I really wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, so I picked PETE because it seemed applicable living her in Alaska where oil is such a big part of the economy and such, and I have always kind of been in to math/sciences, or so I thought. Until I took some college math/science courses, and remembered that I have a love/hate relationship with these subjects.

Now, looking at it realistically, I’ve got a LONG way to go to my Bachelor’s Degree, facing a huge wall of seemingly impassable math/science courses, and struggling to keep my GPA up. Bottom line is, I want to get out of college faster and enter the job market sooner.

Right now I’m considering dropping my B.S. program and entering in an A.A.S. program for Process Technology and getting a Certificate in Instrumentation. (gotta have both, chances are better of getting hired). The money is as almost as good as a Petroleum Engineer, and I would still get to work in the oil industry, and still be involved in math/science to some degree. I have a friend who has earned his degree in Process Tech, and a few more who are working on it, and they like it.

Like I said, looking at it realistically, I have a WALL of hard classes to take, and I’m not trying to sell myself short, but I will be in college a LONG time if I stay with my PETE program. Classes such as:
Calc 2/3
Differential Equations
Chem 105/106
Phys 211/212

Now I know, blah blah blah, I can do whatever I set my mind to, all that jazz.

But I really don’t think that Engineering is for me.

Now here’s where the blues come in.
If I get a Process Tech degree I will make good money, be happy.

Today, I thought about how much I love English, and how I always kinda had a secret love affair with it but denied it. So I thought about going for a B.A. in English. Question is, what can I do with a B.A. in English? Well, I could be a writer, or a teacher. I’m kinda partial to teaching, as I looked up to my high school english teacher and was very creative, I have excellent grammar and writing skills, and love to write. I did very well in my 111 and 213 English classes, and had a great time in them.

And then, I thought about a B.A. in Anthropology. I took one Anthro class last semester, and loved it. I would want to go into the archaeological aspect of it, because growing up, my family and I lived on the Yukon, and would pass the time by searching for fossils near my family’s camp, and I was always interested in this.

It would be WAY easier to get a B.A. in English or Anthro than to stick with PETE.

So my options are, stick to a B.S. in PETE, get an A.A.S. in Process Tech, or get a B.A. in English or Anthro.

Now I know I’m trying to take the easy way out, but like I said before, I have to look at this realistically, and I know I’m kinda doubting myself, but I think I would be happy with any of these options. And that’s what life is about, isn’t it?

Getting in the job market soon is probably NOT a good idea, for obvious reasons.

If its just a matter of time, and you can tough it out without dropping out, go for the Petrol Engineering.
