My thanks to CC member lockn for posting a link in another thread that I was sure existed, but had never been able to Google up.

The Gallup Poll asked Americans back in 2003, when CC was just getting started, “All in all, what would you say is the best college or university in the United States?” Respondents were asked to name two colleges. That produces an interesting list of colleges, ranked by how often they were mentioned. (I was SEVERELY tempted to title this thread in a way that would point out that my alma mater outranks half of the eight colleges in the Ivy League by this methodology.) Follow the link for the list and a discussion of the poll methodology and results.

P.S. Have you ever wondered who actually gets contacted by the Gallup Poll? As of a few weeks ago, I can say it is people like me. I actually got a random phone call from Gallup just after President Obama entered office, asking me questions about current events and the general state of the economy. I was impressed by the thoroughness of the phone interview. (I had been interviewed by the Harris Poll once back in the 1990s.)
