If this was the second in a season of 13 episodes, it would have been ok. Lots of nice conversation and everything but seemed very slow, especially after last week getting most of the characters into place. I thought Arya’s behavior was very out of character and I was trying to remember how old she’s supposed to be in the show - still a teenager? Also would have liked more of Sir Jorah and Lady Lyanna’s reunion and less of that crowd sitting around a fire and saying nothing. Bran was enjoyable; really threw Jamie for a loop. “The things I do for love” indeed!
Some of the interactions seemed too drawn out and some seemed too rushed. I felt that Dany was patronizing to Sansa. And the Big Reveal of Jon’s parentage - whoosh, can’t stop to discuss, the dead are coming! I did appreciate Sansa’s reaction to seeing Theon. Him, she forgave! Guess his redemption arc is complete now.
Presumably next week will be action packed though. I just felt there was a spark missing this week.
I liked this episode. It was so different than all the others. I got tears when Jaime and Bran were talking; and laughed at fireside talks.
Dany can only think about the crown. Those are her first words when Jon talks to her; not about her relationship with Jon but rather that he is the heir. i’m not as fond of her as I was. I want to watch it again!
and speaking of books; i did read the first book years ago. It was hard reading and keeping track of everyone; but it sure gave great background and was a big help when I started watching the series. I liked the series better than the book I read; never went back. However, it really was helpful and i’d encourage anyone just starting it to do the same.
I liked this episode too. I’m afraid we will be losing too many people next week and it’s nice to spend some quiet time with them before they go. The godswood is sure to be an intense place in the next episode.
I looked at the last two episodes as the calm before the storm. It reminded me of why I liked most of these characters, and made me care more even as I know many of them will die. Stupid show, lol.
Line of the night was Tormund asking about Brien: “The big woman still here?”
And I’m developing a grudging respect for Sansa. Dany is getting an attitude I don’t care for.
A quibble: Dragon glass (obsidian) is brittle. Might hold up when stabbing white walkers but wouldn’t endure being hurled at and stuck in wood, as Arya did with the three daggers.
We also liked last night’s episode better than the last. The conversations were nice, although I also felt like they were setting us up before we lose some people very soon! Arya though…we all think of her as a child and I didn’t appreciate the side naked view! We don’t like the new Arya either…I think it would be much more interesting if she still had a spark of her mischievous, humorous child side show through now and then.
I think the tension between Sansa and Dany is interesting. I like never knowing what Sansa is going to do. I also liked the Theon/Sansa scene although that was another one where we were like “uh oh, he’s probably on the dead list now” lol.
I agree with everyone’s wrap up of the books; I read them all before watching the show. It’s fun watching now and finally NOT knowing what happens, but I’ll admit…I liked the earlier TV seasons better when we were jumping around and there were so many interesting relationships…now that there is one purpose, it seems a tad bit boring or anticlimactic. One interesting item from the books that didn’t make it to TV was that Kat lives on after her murder as some sort of half undead creature, Lady of the Lake or something like that? Also side note, it looks like the actress playing Gilly is pregnant in real life.
My dislike for Daenerys grows stronger every episode. Two examples from last night:
Dany tried to make nice with Sansa with a little girl-talk until Sansa asks "“And what happens afterwards? We defeat the dead, we destroy Cersei. What happens then… What about the North?” (Good for you, Sansa - that’s probably one of the more important questions of the season!)
And what does Dany do? She snatches her hand away and departs.
And then, of course, when Jon tells Dany who he really is, does she seem sad? Can you see her love for Jon? Does she seem upset that she’s been bonking her nephew? No, her immediate response is "you’re the last male heir of House Targaryen…You’d have a claim to the Iron Throne.”
I never liked Dany much, and I dislike her more and more as time passes. I wouldn’t be at all distressed if she’s on next week’s casualty list – although I don’t think that will happen.
I love the scene where Gilly handles the little girl so skillfully.
I had to laugh - apparently there was a spike during the show time last night on google hits on “how old is Maisie Williams” (the actress who plays Arya). I personally liked that scene… good for her for taking charge of things. Loved the part where Brienne got knighted, although I’m pretty sure that was setting her up to get killed next week (ending of her story, basically).
So do we think that they defeat the white walkers next week at Winterfell and then have to go defeat Cersei, or do we think that Winterfell falls next week and they have to escape (by dragon back?) to King’s Landing or something like that and have another fight against white walkers in the final episode?
I don’t think they’ll defeat the white walkers next week but they may get a reprieve, then the zombies move on to Cersei and they’ll have to chase them and grudgingly save Cersei.
Dany will almost do something terrible but then turn around and sacrifice herself for Jon.
The Night King will turn out to be a zombie Mad King Targaryen
I think Theon is a goner, as is Brienne (oops, that’s SER Brienne). The fact that she has been knighted feels like a death sentence.
I think Grey Worm is going to die, too (“uh-oh, he’s talking about a future with Missandei after the war - he’s dead!”)
I have some other predictions but that’s enough for now. (I have a bad feeling about all those people hiding out in the crypts…) All I can say is, if Lady Lyanna Mormont dies, I’m out of here…
Anyone else think putting the women and children into the crypt to stay safe is a VERY. BAD. IDEA??? What with all the dead bodies stored there being potential recruits for the army of the dead?
I loved the scene with Arya - if I were in her position, I’d be doing the same thing! She wants to have the experience before she dies - I get it.
I do think Brienne is going to die, but Jaime will die first, in her arms.
I believe Tyrion will live.
Well, ONE of the Starks has to die. I’m guessing Bran…and maybe Jon.
And yeah @fireflyscout - see my post above. How many times last night did they say “the crypt is the safest place”? Isn’t that just like saying ”EVERYONE IN THE CRYPT IS GOING TO DIE”?
I assumed that Bran would die but then he gave this whole speech about how he carries the memories of all mankind. Seems like a bad plan to have all of humanity hinging on the survival of one person. Maybe they can fix that and then kill him off.
Hmmm, thought of something else. What if Dany uses her dragon’s fire in battle to kill the dead, but Jon/Aegon is caught in it? If he’s a true Targaryen, he might be able to survive the dragon fire, thus proving to Dany who he is.
