Game of Thrones- who will live, who will die, who will rule?

Here is a thread for all those who are excited for the final season of Game of Thrones.

Which major characters do you think will die?
What will be the new government- will someone become queen or king (Daenerys, Jon, or someone else), or will the form of government change?

I’m routing for King Samwell Tarly, but I don’t really like my odds.

I’m hoping for Daenerys and the resurrection of Kahl Drogo. I don’t like my odds either

I think queen Cersei will die and I am rooting for King Jon Snow. Not too exciting outcome I guess

Daenerys and Jon Snow. Ok, a cliche

Personally I’d like to see Sansa on the throne, with Tyrion as her Hand and Arya as chief enforcer. Most everyone else will die LOL. Samwell will kill the Night King. Jaime will kill Cersei then die protecting…maybe Brienne? Jon will do something incredibly heroic and probably very stupid. He knows nothing.

Daenerys will look really good in whatever she wears. Or doesn’t wear. But will she still try to end the wheel?

There’s a suggestion in various articles that Gendry will end up as king, although that’s not one I necessarily believe. He certainly has endurance! (There are also theories that Sansa and Gendry will end up married to unite the Starks and Barathoens.)

@gallentjill
I like your idea and I really like Sam.

Ohhh, I like Sensa on the throne, Tyrion and @Arya nearby.

So, can’t D and Jon live happily in the wall to guard against the night walkers?

My guessing, based on what the characters themselves have said over the years -

Jaime has said he wants to die “in the arms of someone I love” - so he’ll die in Brienne’s (?) arms

Bron will survive since he wants to die “old” and “at home in bed” or something like that (can’t remember exactly what he said a few seasons ago)

Cersei will die at the hands of Jaime or Tyrion (to fulfill the prophesy)

Both Varis and Melissandrs will die (as the Red Woman said they would last season)

Now just my guessing -

Gendry will survive and be named head of House Baratheon.

Tyrion will die due to some tragic misunderstanding/deal making with good intentions…he’ll do something that makes D and/or John think he betrayed them when actually he was just trying to make something work out.

The Hound will kill the Mountain (Cleganbowl)!

Qyburn will be so delighted at the sight of all the undead and the mystical stuff that he won’t care whether or not he dies, he’ll be thrilled with it all up until the moment he’s killed.

It’s possible this is all just a story Samwell reads to his son every night. He was supposed to write a history of Westeros back in the Citadel, I think. That ending would probably tick off a lot of viewers, though.

I can’t make any guesses but I’m very excited to find out!!

We are making a pool in our house over this all - on who lives or dies. In G.O.T. good doesn’t always win over evil. Maybe i’ll guess that the white walkers take over everywhere. Either way, we are excited. I love Samwell. And I think someone will end up with Brienne.

@JanieWalker
I really hope Tyrion survives, GoT without Peter Dinklage?! No!

Why I feel Brienne will die for Jamie? Don’t want it to happen. Also don’t want Jamie die.

Yes, please let The Hound kill The Mountain!

I am unsure who will rule- Jon or Daenerys or a new elected democracy.

Jon Snow’s whole arc has been about self-sacrifice for a greater cause, and he is a reluctant leader who at one point notes that he does not like what he is good at doing. Does that make him the best leader because he is less self-regarding than all those others… or does that make him not ruthless enough to rule (he already has been killed once by his own people)… or does that make self-sacrifice his natural end?

If you give it a Lord of the Rings spin, then he is Aragorn- the one true king by blood right. But that seems too simplistic for Martin’s more nuanced and realistic take on the fantasy genre and the politics and motivations of the human beings inhabiting that world.

On the other hand, why both bring him back to life and reveal that he is the Targaryen heir, if he is just going to die? What would be the point?

Daenerys’s rise to power has been inspirational, she has attracted a devoted following, her intentions are good, and she seems magically anointed, bringing dragons to life and living through fire. Extra points from a feminist standpoint for her being in command and her boyfriend yielding the power to her.

But she is also ruthless and too fixated on having everyone “bend the knee” to her. Look at her burning of the Tarlys and her random crucifixion of a set number of the members of a slaveowning elite- including, it is revealed, one who was a good and progressive man who actively opposed the crucifixion of the children. Apart from freeing a bunch of slaves, she sounds much the same as many of the previous leaders of Westeros.

To “break the wheel,” perhaps no single ruler should sit the Iron Throne. Does that mean that the whole form of government should change?

Some fans have said Jon Snow will kill Daenerys in an echo of Azor Ahai, but I do not think he will. That seems out of character.

Simpler answers:

I am pretty certain that Jaime Lannister will sacrifice himself while killing Cersei at the same time, in the interest of some greater good. Like perhaps Cersei will be setting wildfire or white walkers on her enemies, and he will stop her, just as he stopped Aerys, but this time he himself will die in the process.

Theon- He seems likely to die in some self-sacrificial act while being brave and selfless for one of the first times in his life.

I am pretty sure Samwell Tarly will live and write the story. I suspect Tyrion will live as well.

The final role of religion also is unclear. All the religions have been shown both to have some real power (weirwoods connect you to other times and places, the red god brings people back to life and creates shadow baby killers), and to be evil in that they lead their strongest adherents to do evil acts when they are in power (like burning Shireen and others alive for the red god, and the Faith Militant and High Sparrow’s cruel, power-hungry excesses). I suspect that this will not even be addressed/ answered directly in the last season. The only way it might be, is if the whole “god-and-blood-determined-monarch” concept is set aside in a vision of a new secular democratic government based on Enlightenment principles.

This may happen, but I hope it doesn’t. People don’t always have heroic ends and cowards often stay cowards their entire lives. I think it would be more interesting for him to survive as a coward, without redemption, having to live with himself as he truly is.

Ooh. Great thread topic. I’m kind of scared to think about the characters I like ending up dead, but with GoT it’s happened before and I’m sure it will happen again. I do wonder about breaking the wheel - will there even be an Iron Throne at the end? I think Samwell will end up writing the story, and giving it a more exciting title than “The History of Westeros” since he mentioned how boring the book titles were when he was at the Citadel. I also suspect there may be no more dragons by the end.

I don’t want Tyrion to die either, but I think he will, and that it will be tragic and emotional.

The trailer with Cersei looking upset with Qyburn looking on - my guess is that she’s reacting to the news of Jaime’s death. Why else would she look sad? He’s the only one she cares about.

Another guess from a trailer (the crypt one) - John, Sansa, and Arya survive. There are stone statues of each of them, maybe put there by descendants. Yes, in the teaser trailer the three are there looking at the statues, but I still interpret it as them surviving and the show runners are just giving us hints.

@MamaBear16 Sam will write the history and call it Game of Thrones. ?

^Or Song of Ice and Fire.
