Gap year thread!

Who else is on a gap year this year? What is everyone doing?

(I saw this thread, and I’ve never clicked on a link to a thread that quickly in my life XD)

So, yeah, I am! I’m working full-time at my school as an archivist, English teaching assistant, advisor, and faculty advisor to some clubs (mock trial, gay-straight alliance). I’m also taking a philosophy-type class that I missed out on when I was a student, and I’m a member of the faculty a capella group. More informally, I’m learning a bit of Scottish Gaelic, Old English, and German; writing a novel in November for National Novel Writing Month; either taking a bookbinding class or being in a Shakespeare production; travelling to Scotland; reading all of Shakespeare’s plays in chronological order, one a week; and, of course, APPLYING TO COLLEGE.

Whew.

How about you?

Yay!! Someone else!

I’ll be interning at my dance studio (three preschool classes, one kindergarten/first grade class, one fourth grade class), taking my own dance classes, an acting class that culminates in a trip to New York City, Spanish, French, and art classes. I’ll also be working on the novel I’m writing (will take me more than a month though, good for you  ) and taking some tennis. I’m trying to get myself another part time job to fill up some holes in my schedule. As for travel, in June I went to Switzerland and I have a trip to Norway planned. I might go see my cousins in the UK, I’ll have to see. I have a guaranteed spot at college for the fall of 2015, so I don’t have to do that. Good luck with those apps though!

Thank you! And it sounds like you have a great year ahead of you! If you don’t mind me asking, where are you headed next fall?

It’s great to talk to someone else taking a year off. All my friends are headed to college and talking college stuff, I wanted someone to talk gap year stuff with! I’ll be at the College of William & Mary. (Tribe Pride! )

One of my best friends is going there now actually! So far he loves it  I’ve heard great things about it, but I think it’s too far removed from New England for me. I’m probably applying ED to Vassar, and I also love Wesleyan and Middlebury.

I really liked the sense of community there. I’m in state, so the distance is just right. Sounds like you have a good list. What do you want to study?

English and either theatre, history, medieval/renaissance studies, or German (I want to be a curator of rare books or something having to do with books/the history of the English language…) Definitely going to double major, just not sure about which one be my other major…

Have you considered linguistics? I was thinking of majoring in that. I have so many interests, I might end up combining them into a self designed major. Who knows, that’s what this year is supposed to help with. I definitely want a creative writing minor, no matter what I do.

I love linguistics, but I’m not sure what I’d end up doing as a career - I don’t think I’d be a great professor, and I want to study the evolution of language which I don’t think is really applicable to the FBI or other organisations that frequently hire linguists… I just don’t know enough about the potential careers, I think… Definitely interested, though.

Sounds like the subfield you would be interested in is historical linguistics. A really cool job historical linguists work in a lot is language preservation and documentation. The Smithsonian had a project called Enduring Voices where they recorded and analyzed several severely endangered languages. You could also work as a lexicographer (making dictionaries).

Thanks for the information! Historical linguistics is EXACTLY what I’m interested in. Time to go do some more Google search browsing…

Correction: The National Geographic Society organized the Enduring Voices program.

Anyone else here on CC on a gap year?

Ooh, they moved the non-traditional forum to be a visible subforum on the main forum page  hopefully this will encourage more discussion - I definitely know of other people taking gap years on this site.

Yay! That’s good. Hopefully people find us.

I’m also doing a gap year! Hopefully it will be much more fruitful this year.

@viphan yay, welcome to the gap year club! What are you doing this year?

Well I’m going to volunteer at a charity organization on a weekly basis, and I have an internship at local political office I hope to continue (it was a summer internship but I asked for them to extend into school year).

Other than that, preparing for ACT (which I’m taking this Saturday), revising my college essays, and reading LOTS of books.

Sounds like fun - and reading is always wonderful ^.^ did you apply to college last year? And do you mind if I ask why you’re reapplying? You don’t have to say, but I’m doing the same thing, so I’m curious
