<p>So I am really interested in a gap year program in Israel called “Workshop” and it’s run by the Jewish Labor Zionist Group Habonim Dror. I was recently accepted into Maryland and the Scholars program. Does anybody know if it is difficult to get a deferral request passed? And also, is anyone else interested in taking a Gap Year?</p>
<p>My kid is planning a gap year. We didn’t specifically ask at Maryland, but every other school we talked to said a deferral for a gap year was no problem.</p>
<p>My kid and I did specifically ask at Maryland. Taking a gap year will not affect your admission, your merit aid, or your offer to join Honors or Scholars if you got that.</p>
<p>Our DS’s roommate freshman yr did this and he was scholars too. On top of that he decided to do the undergrad and grad program (5 yr for govt). So, yes you can have it all!</p>
<p>Does anyone know if you are admitted for Spring 2012 and decide to take a gap year whether you can request a deferral until Fall 2012, or would you have to defer a full 12 months until Spring 2013?</p>
<p>Does anyone know the procedure for requesting a deferral for a gap year? Do you pay the admission deposit, fill out housing request, etc, and then request the deferral?</p>
<p>If you have done this before with UMD, please let me know what the procedure is…</p>

<p>I wouldn’t think you’d fill out the housing request, since the student won’t need housing for the time they are away. You should call the Admissions Office (301.314.8385) to get more specific details.</p>
