Gap Year?

<p>What is MIT’s policy on taking a year off? I remember reading somewhere that it was encouraged, but now I can’t seem to find anything online. How and by when must one inform MIT? what sort of gap year activities are acceptable?</p>

Deferred Admissions: </p>

<p>Occasionally, students wish to take a year off between secondary school and college. In such cases, it is recommended that the student follow normal admissions procedures, as if going directly on to college, and then request deferment. Deferrals are granted for any reason except full-time enrollment at another university.

<p>I don’t know about MIT specifically, but most colleges want to know by the Candidate’s Reply Date (May 1 or 2) that you are requesting a deferral. I would suggest calling the admissions office ASAP (if you’re trying to defer enrollment for next year).</p>
