Hi, I am a freshman in high school and am applying to the Garcia Center Summer Scholar Program. What are the chances that I’ll get in, being a freshman? This is targeted towards people who have applied and/or gone before or are now. I just want to know if I’m wasting my time.

Thanks!

not much chance at all.

You need to be 16, which means the program is usually rising juniors + seniors.

Also, the GPA requirement on the website is unusually high. A 99.5 unweighted average is nearly impossible, even among valedictorians.

website says:

Requirements
Must be, at least, 16 years old
Have an average GPA of 3.98 or 99.5, unweighed

Must have, at least 3 of the following subjects
English (Honors or AP a plus)
Chemistry (Honors or AP a plus)
Mathematics or Calculus (Honors or AP a plus)
Physics (Honors or AP a plus)
Biology (optional) (Honors or AP a plus)

Standardized test scores (SAT or Regents) must be 60% or above.
Students who show evidence of leadership, special talents or interests, and other personal qualities through extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and other non-academic pursuits will receive special consideration.
