Gas dryers

Has anyone purchased a new gas dryer recently? The dryer died today and I need to replace it.

I have a kenmore elite gas dryer. Works great.

We have a nice Sears hometown store in my small town and we have bought our appliances there. Most people would say to avoid Sears like the plague though

Look at a Speed Queen. Their washers are plain old amazing. Drier will last a long time.

Love my old gas dryer. Will have to switch to electric in the new place or run a gas line $$$. The sales person recommended Speed Queen.

I can vouch for Speed Queen. My father bought one when my mother was in the hospital giving birth to me. I was # 5 of 6 in an age of cloth diapers, so it ran all the time. 30 some years later, when she moved from the big house to a condo after my dad died, she gave it me, just in time for my two kids… It finally dried it’s last load on my 43rd Birthday. We have had two dryers since then, neither one a Speed Queen. Should have known better.

I love my Electrolux; bought it in 2008, moved it from my house to condo.

Anyone here has a condenser dryer? Mr. wants to eliminate the vent. :frowning:

We purchased a Speed Queen washer and a Speed Queen gas dryer a few weeks ago from a local small retailer that specializes in appliances. So far we are very happy with both.

Our local plumber (who we have been dealing with for years) showed up late afternoon and disconnected the old dryer. The next morning the appliance store delivered both, and took away both old appliances. About 1/2 hour later the plumber returned and connected the new dryer.

Speed queen units are built like the proverbial brick out house, they are built much like appliances were 30 years ago or more. Dryers tend to be a lot simpler than washers, one of the most common items to go is the igniter, but for example if they use a direct drive to the drum and the unit breaks (usually cheap plastic), it doesn’t pay to replace it, back in the day there was a belt that could be easily replaced. Speed Queen is a good, basic dryer, it doesn’t have all the fancy settings, is likely not high efficiency particularly, but they will last and they are also very easy to repair.

Mine is vented, but when my Kenmore died (outlasted 3 washing machines) I bought a really basic Speed Queen. Totally happy and never used all those settings that the Kenmore had anyway.

Thank you all. I am having a new Speed Queen dryer installed on Tuesday. It’s not a basic model. It has the anti-wrinkle cycle I like.

Dang. Just read the review of the SQ combo I want to buy… One reviewer said the washer eats socks and gets clogged. Noooooo!!! I need to find a way to keep my Miele, but need a new dryer.

The dryer part got excellent reviews.

When visiting my cousin I grew fond of her SQ.

I have an LG steam set.

I love gas dryers because they’re fast.

We successfully moved the Miele and disposed of the old dryer. I ordered a Speed Queen gas dryer - that thing cost $$$$ but after moving the Miele that weighs a TON and comparing it with the cheesy plastic LG, Mr. was not keen on buying anything less sturdy. When the Miele croaks, I will probably get a Speed Queen front loader, even if it has a sock choking issue, LOL. They come with 5 yr warranty - standard.

In other news, kiddos are getting a new set of Whilpools as an early Christmas gift from us. Kiddo got tired of listening to her European-raised hubby blasting the “stupid clothes ripper” aka the old agitator machine that came with their house.

You may notice a difference with any new dryer compared to ancient ones from childhood days. The temperature settings are lower so the high heat will not be as high. I don’t think it takes that long for an electric dryer to get up to temp so I do not see a time advantage with gas and the cool down time will be from hot clothes releasing heat unlike the nice residual burner heat on a stove.

The big disadvantage of having an electric dryer: the $$$ an electrician will charge to run a 220 line for it to the laundry room. Gas is already plumbed there. Someone with a 220 outlet will say a similar thing about having a gas line extended.
