Gas fireplace question

We had a gas fireplace put in. It’s on a pilot. Is there anything that needs to be done to it before it gets turned on each year?

Make sure the pilot is lit

We did not do anything - just lit the pilot and let it stay on for a few minutes then flip the wall switch. Occasionally, you might want to call a service to tune it up.

I would also take the glass out and clean it and vacuum the box under the fireplace.

Thanks!

Our service person told us to keep the pilot on all summer. He said turning it off would clog the pilot. He was servicing us because our pilot would not light. We have had no problem since.

He said the energy use was minimal and cost was low,

I leave my pilot on all year too. We’ve had it 18 years. The first few I had them come every year and “service” it. I watched and they were doing very little. I got lazy and forgot to call them for a few years. Everything was still fine, so I stopped calling them. Haven’t had the first issue.

Huge waste to keep your pilot on all summer long. Please be nice to Mother Earth and don’t heat your house up so you don’t need to condition it as well.
