I was in NJ yesterday, got my car fueled up 93 for 3.39/gallon. Today, here in Boston, the gas price 93 is 3.79!

For stay at home empty nest, how much is the “reasonable” gas budget? How to keep the gas budget?

We recently got our AmEx Costco statement which shows that I paid just under $2K for 12 months of gas in HI, plus H bought gas on a different credit card for his car. What is “reasonable” depends on your vehicle, how far you drive, alternative transportation options, etc. Our gas prices are uniformly among the highest in the nation. I conserve by trying to run errands & go to meetings as efficiently as possible with little backtracking (tho it can be easier said than done). I also try to share rides when possible, which is “greener” than everyone driving own vehicles. Our bus system is not great–buses often only run once/hour and sometimes longer between buses, so not a great option, especially at night.

We’re not good at budgets in this household, but generally just successfully try to live well below our income.

RUG gas in NJ averages about $3.10 a gal. And they pump it for you (there are no gas self-servs in NJ). It’s the only bargain we have!

toblin- I miss the gas pumped by others days- my dad put me through college by taking a second job pumping gas in NJ. I will always remember that. With great respect for his humility.

In OR, they still pump gas and you ARE NOT ALLOWED by state law to pump it yourself (as a jobs saving measure). In HI, gas prices are approaching $4. It’s challenging, especially for families that live far from their workplaces and have to commute during heavy traffic. I am grateful that mostly my hours are flexible and allow me to stay out of the worst traffic.

$3.27 at Home Depot which is my CHEAP place! (TN)

I pay for gasoline with energy company dividends.

Yes, everybody love the full service at NJ the low gas price. But some of our property tax (NJ, which is one of the highest in the nation) goes to gas, therefore, we can have lower price plus full service.

Here in Boston, higher price, cold weather and I still have to go outside my car to pump the gas…

BCEagle91- what is “energy company dividends”?

Ps: I love Costco. There are few more Costco in NJ are building their gas station. Same as Sam’s club.

“BCEagle91- what is “energy company dividends”?”

I think he means he has XOM, RDS, CVX stocks and they pay dividends.

HImom–same in NJ–not allowed to pump your own.

I think it’s time to raise the gas tax in NJ.

Actually, now I am so used to quick self service pay & pump that NJ gas buying was bit irritating.

PVX pays a $0.045 dividend per month. 5,000 shares would generate $2,700 per year in dividend income. Some of that is lost to income taxes of course. Last year, they paid $0.06 per month or $0.72/year so 5,000 shares would generate $3,600/year.

Gas here (NC) is around $3.35 and seems to go up every day.
Our grocery store has a Fuel Perks deal. You sign up for the program then every time you swipe your discount card at the register, you earn fuel perks. I earn $.05 per gallon off BP gas for every $50 I spend. Sometimes there are specials and you earn $.10/gal. off for every $50 spent. You can accrue your fuel perks over a couple of months. There is a 20 gallon limit per visit at the BP gas pump when using the card. Right now I have $.60 in Fuel Perks on my card. BP is the most expensive gas in our town but the Fuel Perks program is bringing them business. I never used the BP station before Fuel Perks.

The best is the Shell Mastercard from Citi. You get 5% off Shell gas.

The Giant grocery stores in central PA (not to be confused with the Giant grocery stores in the DC area) let you earn discounts on gas at their own gas stations. You can only fill up one car, with a 30 gallon limit. They start at $0.10/gallon off, and you can get bonus points for buying certain items. Once we got $1.10/gallon off! Needless to say, we waited until the car was running on fumes before we filled up… :)

“There are few more Costco in NJ are building their gas station.”…where?

right now it only looks like Southern NJ near the shore (and one in Clifton) has the gas…

do you know something we don’t know?

Central Coast Ca- 3.69 at the least expensive gas station. Regular Unleaded.

Rodney - edison. And one more I forget the name.

^^yea, Edison is south of here…I looked it up online…too bad they arent’ opening everywhere!!

I long for the days to see $3.50 a gallon. I am from Canada and converting our prices to the American gallon still brings our cost to about $4.26 a gallon. A Canadian gallon is going for about $5.50. It isn’t that I mind (well I do but) the price of gas going up but it really bothers me that the exact same gas that is in the dealers tanks changes almost hourly. New gas I can see being more expensive but not what is already there. We have one dealer that every morning between 630 and 830 drops his price by about $0.20 /US Gallon to draw in the rush hour traffic. At 830 his prices go up to match the rest of the stations. We spend about $200 a month in just gas.
