<p>Has anyone tried the method that finalists tried last year (calling in and then clicking the scholars option)? I heard they’ve made it so we can’t do that this year but who knows?! I tried and my number wasn’t in their system…</p>

<p>I know the VP for the program at the HQ office in Fairfax, and I wrote him today about the conversation here and the confusion about the e-mails. He told me that GMS doesn’t send out e-mailed decisions to winners or to other students. He said packets and letters will be mailed to everyone waiting to hear from the program. He also mentioned that the system doesn’t allow individulas to check their status as new Scholars, so it won’t be helpful to call for a password.</p>

<p>I called and it said the packages were sent out! It usually takes 1 day for mail to get to my house (New York) from virginia so hopefully I find out tomorrow!</p>
<p>The gentleman I talked to said this after I just sent him the above VP reference:</p>
<p>“I must let you know that I have spoken outside my authority and I apologize for any confusion. Please be resolved to know that notifications will be sent out soon. Please be patient.”</p>

<p><em>major facepalm moment</em> So I must wait until Tuesday/Wednesday to find out my decision instead of tomorrow. Great. At least I’ll know eventually. Off to study for APs and return with my status of scholar/non scholar when it comes.</p>
<p>@alextylec - so you got a new message other than the one from the original notification of finalist status? Said something other than - A letter has been sent to you regarding your nomination status, as of 4/15 GMS has received 5 out of 5 of the required documents…</p>
<p>If that is what you heard, that letter is referencing the FIRST notification of finalist status - if you heard something else - please SHARE!</p>

<p>Mom of a Gates Scholar from three years ago here. Things could of changed of course, but my D’s year there were no emails, and the packages were VERY spread out, time wise. I think my D got hers 3 weeks after the first ones were mailed out. She had pretty much forgotten about it and it showed up. I guess I am trying to say don’t give up hope if you don’t get the big package right away next week.</p>

I don’t know if it’s true or not (I don’t have the time to check right now) but I was just glancing through the First Year Initiative newsletter they send gates APIASF scholars every month, and I noticed at the end that they said GMS just selected the scholars for 2011 and the names are on the website! It should be under press/news/something like that if I remember right. I hope I’m not wrong/I hope I didn’t misread; just thought I’d throw this out there. If it’s not up they should post it soon?
