I’m a Gates Scholar and I’m attending an in-state public institution. If I don’t live on campus and live at home, the tuition will be around $10,000. If I live on campus, the total Cost of Attendance will be around $20,000. My EFC is around $5,000 and I have around $6,0000 of institutional scholarship. My question is, if I decide to live at home then would it mean that Gates will not pay anything for next year and I’ll be responsible for the $4000? If I decide I’m going to live on campus, then Gates will pay for the difference after subtracting the EFC and the scholarships? Based on the calculation provided, I’m very disappointed because I just receive such a prestigious scholarship as Gates and now either have to pay $5,000-with room and board or $4,000- without room and board.

Can anyone please tell me if my theory is correct??? Thanks!

@ irishdude11: Did everyone who made it to the finalist round receive the scholarship?

I’m feeling very discouraged. There were 2 other finalist from my school and they both received notification that they are gates scholars yet I have received nothing.

anyone from south carolina??? please, I am freaking out. Do I still have any hope? It seems like there isn’t anything to hope for anymore…god, I never win anything.

Missybitsy - Gates does not pay your EFC so whether you stay on campus or not you will be required to pay your EFC. I talked to a GMS rep yesterday and he confirmed that Gates does not pay for anyone’s EFC. But you can take out a student loan for your EFC. Unfortunately your EFC is really high. Also I do know that you can spread payments over the semester or year with your college. I know it’s tough, but thank God for the Gates anyway because without it you would be paying the EFC AND student loans. So you are still coming out better with the Gates. Another option would be to apply for more scholarships to help out with the EFC. It’s not too late some deadlines are as late as June/July. Good luck!

Hey i got my GMS packet monday. but i just checked my email and GMS sent me an email also. so everybody check your email if you havent recived a packet yet. Good luck !

Okay so I’m still nervous not for my daughter but the others on CC that have not heard anything yet. I want everyone on here to get it! So I just called the GMS ofc and they told me that all notifications good or bad went out at the same time April 15. so I think that’s good news because the people that have not heard yet still have a chance for good news! I was thinking they sent out the good news first then the bad news next, but they don’t so please don’t give up hope especially emoryguy and Eecardell we are pulling for you!!

Additional scholarships won’t help re the EFC. They’re good to have for the resume and for things GMS won’t cover like computer costs. But when I was in college, the FA office explained that no scholarship can cover EFC. Check with GMS, or even better, with the FA office at your school.

I received my packet in the mail today–Gates Scholar. Really excited! However, I will not post my stats on here. I noticed a lot of students claiming to be loosing hope because everyone had amazing GPAs and many community service hours. I do not have these high stats. I don’t think that informing people of your stats is helpful at all. Everybody is different and I feel that Gates really wanted us to tell our story and how we could make something big out of something small–valedictorian or not. Seriously guys…dont loose hope!

For all of us waiting and to those who are celebrating. Please feel free to replace the deity with whatever of the nine billion names of God/s you choose. It made me stop in my tracks and know that whatever it is, it is.

Hear me quickly, Lord
For my mind soon wanders to other things
I am more familiar with
and concerned about
than I am with you.

O Timeless God, for whom I do not have time
catch me with a sudden stab of beauty
or pain
or regret
that will catch me up short for a moment
to look hard enough at myself
the unutterable terror
and hope within me
and, so, to be caught by you.

Listen to my blinking eyes,
for at certain moments
when sunlight strikes just right,
Or stars pierce the darkness just enough,
Or clouds roll around just so,
Or snow kisses the earth into quietness,
everything is suddenly transparent,
and crows announce the presence of another world,
and dogs bark at it,
and something in me is pure enough

for an instant
to see your kingdom in a glance,
and to praise you in a gasp ---
quick,
then gone,
but it is enough.

My mom just called and they said they’re still sending letters out, good or bad. Why do I feel like every time someone calls we all get different answers? ugh.
