Gates Millenium Scholarship Official Thread 2013

AZScholar17 - You were a winner last year and shared something I had not yet read before. uestion - They choose 500 finalists from each ethnic group… then cut to 250 per group for winners? So there is an actual quota per ethnic group?

People,
I was selected as a finalist, but what is the Pell Grant cut off? I think I am a bit over . :(

I’m from Texas and haven’t heard gotten anything. I’m pretty sure they’re still sending them out.

My daughter is an African-American applicant from Oklahoma. When I called today about 8 a.m. Central time, the message said 0 of 5 documents had been submitted. I got very excited. Then by 9:00 a.m. today the voice mail message changed to: “A letter has been sent to you about your nomination status. Please allow 2 weeks to receive your notification. If you have not received your notification by then, you may call back and have your letter re-sent.” But no letter in the mailbox yet. Once you are a finalist, is it just a matter of Gates confirming that you are Pell Grant eligible and that your academic information you submitted matches up to your transcript, etc.? Or are they still going to have to cut finalists even if they submit all needed information.

@kcquite… Yes the second round, they choose 500 scholars from each group, 2000 overall. Then the second round, the final 1000 scholars. 250 each from the API. Native Americans, African American, Latino/Hispanic. I was informed of this from the conference I attended.

Hey guys it’s ok. Today, I didn’t get the 0-5 document message when I called the number but I am a finalist. African American from Oregon. I was so anxious like most of you, but it’s ok. It’s not over.

*then the FINAL round…

how does the selection process from finalist to Gates Scholar work? Is there a Pell Grant cut off?

what’s the cut off for being pell grant eligible? i’m concerned that i’m too high now since i haven’t received any mail yet :/

I’m a finalist YAY!!! (from Georgia)

@kevin95 not to sure what your first question is asking, but for your second question I believe as long as your pell eligible.

did you find out by mail?

@mammichaels well u gave me hope again. All this 0-5 message talk was getting depressing cause i never received the message. Its nice to know that if u didnt receive it does not automatically mean u are not a finalist

Have most people received their letters from Washington D.C.? I live in Washington State, and I don’t think I’ll get my letter for another day or two if that’s the case.

I would be happy to answer any questions. : )

Any Asian from the midwest receive anything yet? :</p>

Azscholar17, I don’t know if you have already answered this question, but is this GMS conference during Summer or Fall 2013? Or much later than that?

@karlerzz during fall of 2013

@DesireeA which branch did you receive the letter from? Just wondering since I’m from GA too and didn’t receive anything today.

@Azscholar17 - So if I am in the second round, you are saying that I am one of the chosen 500? So now I need to wait to see if I’m one of the 250?

I heard in the past that GMS gave out laptops, do they still do this? What exactly is covered?
