Shiva1995- if I may ask, what ethnicity are you? And where are you from?

Sure. Asian from Texas. Very thrilled.

kcqutie- I got it today in the mail, no email yet. And not a problem! :)

I got my rejection email today. I’m pretty upset, but it was tough competition. I’m so happy for all you finalists. Everything happens for a reason now I’ll wait for other scholarship responses.

Just got the email- I am a finalist!!! I am Hispanic from Virginia.

I was so qualified for this. All leadership and community service activities, very good grades was going to be valedictorian. It doesn’t even matter anymore. This was my last shot. I feel just feel like Dying. Just looked at my email, Hispanic in St. Louis, MO.

African American finalist from VA. I’m still in disbelief…

what are the chances or odds finalists get to become gates scholars? my pal got his letter that hes a finalist and called, texted, and emailed everyoen in his phonebook lol

I’ve pretty much asked the same question and I heard it’s 50/50.

does anyone know how many people in their school are finalists? just wondering.

So far 4! (that I know of) Hoping for more :)

Update! 5 :)

Now it’s 6! Omg I wonder how many more!

dang @waterandbridges that’s a lot! i wonder how many from my school. guess i’ll find out tomorrow.

How do you know that? @Dental

What school do you go to?

Both my female friend and I are finalist from my school in Southern California.

@etg2013 if you don’t mind me asking, what ethnicity are you?

Still waiting to hear whether my son (Hispanic, Texas) is a finalist. He has not yet received an email or a letter (unless it’s in the mailbox today), but one of his schoolmates did get a rejection email today.

My daughter was not a finalist last year, even though she is Hispanic and was salutatorian of her class. The finalists from her school last year were one Asian girl and two African-American boys who didn’t come anywhere close to her stats and community service. She had really good essays, too.

Because she was a National Hispanic Scholar, she did get a $120,000 scholarship to The University of Arizona. If you are Hispanic and do not get Gates, but are a National Hispanic Scholar, there are colleges that will give you very generous scholarships, so don’t lose hope! Other colleges that offered her full rides or nearly full rides were UT Dallas, University of New Mexico, Nebraska and Iowa State, among others I think I am forgetting.

My son was offered the same scholarships and will attend UA with my daughter, but there is still a gap in costs despite the high-dollar scholarship that I will have to make up for two kids. Hoping to hear some good news from Gates!

I myself am Hispanic and my friend is Filipino (pacific islander)
